| Yorkie Baby Ears I am breeding my baby Chloe on Sunday for the first time. Chloe has floppy ears (which I love), but the daddy's ears stand up. My last Yorkie had ears that stood up also and I really prefer that. Is there a way to "train" yorkie ears to stand up? If there is, I don't want to wait until it's too late with the puppies. Thanks in advance for any info. |

| First of all welcome. When I breed Mollie last year she was breed to a male with erect ears, hers will go about 1/2 - 3/4 of the way up when they are shaved. I kept one of her pups Wyatt and the only thing I did was shave them for about 4 months and now they stand on their own. He is now 10 1/2 months old. It may just be a hit or miss thing. Good Luck. In my avatar you can see pictures of them both.

| I went by how much hair was on their ears. If it was really thick I shaved the top third off, front and back. You can also tape their ears up, but wait awhile to see if they'll stand on their own. They go up and down sometimes depending on if they are teething.

| You can tape them to train them, it tells you at what age and how to in the Yorkie book you can buy at the pet store. You use masking tape. |

| Yorkie Baby Ears I just posted for the first time today about "Taylor" our new baby When we got him at about 9 weeks from the breeder, she taped his ears with masking tape then put a bridge of masking tape between the two to hold them erect. She told us to leave it on for two days...which we did. His ears stood so perfect for the next week after having the tape removed, but now are not standing that straight. He is teething and I know that during teething this can cause the ears not to stand up like they should. Our vet told us last night that some feel that a tablespoon of cottage cheese a day for a while can help supply the calcium that will help their ears stand. I am going to try it... here is his video with his ears erect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W6nBQnNWn8 |

| Yorkie Ears My vet told me to massage the ears & in between the ears. He said it helps the muscle. My sister has the brother of my yorkie (Harley Isabelle) & his ears don't stand up. (she didn't do anything to help them) Harley's ears both stand up 100%. I believe that massaging them helped! Good Luck!! |

| Hi, My puppy is 6 months old and only his left ear stands up. I heard about "a tape method" but couldn't find a book explaining how to do it. Does anybody know the title or the author ? Thank you, Barb |

| Yorkie Baby Ears I watched the breeder put the tape on. She used regular masking tape and gently folded each ear like a cone. Not too tight.....and put a piece of tape on each ear. She then took a piece of tape several inches long and attached it in the back from one ear to the next to make a bridge that held them straight up. We were to leave it on two days...which we did. Taylors ears stood straight up for a week but then fell. He was only 9 weeks old....he is now 3 months old and one ear is standing on it's own. We are going to do the tape thing again but I only have paper tape which doesn't stick well...so I'll have to pick up some masking tape. The vet suggested that we give him a tablespoon of cottage cheese a day for a while. We started that several days ago and that is when his right ear began to stand. Good luck. |

| Several things have an effect on the ears. They can be taped as mentioned, and you also have to keep them trimmed correctly for them to stand up. Trixie's ears will start to flop if the hair on them gets too long. Aside from that, floppy ears may also be the result of genetics passed down from the parents. If erect ears are a must as you've mentioned, I would first suggest not breeding a dog with floppy ears. If it is genetic, there will be nothing you can do to change them. I would start by trying to find out if this is a genetic issue with your female, or the result of them not being properly trimmed/taped. IMO, genetic backgroud is a MUST before breeding anyway. |
