| Meet Louis the Great Louis (pronounced like Louie) will be joining our home in mid-May. He will be my first dog, I only ever had cats before, so I'm really excited! He was born on the 19th of March (the picture was taken a week ago, at the 4 week mark) and weighed 160g. He's smaller than his sister - there were only two pups in the litter - but the growth charts I've seen put him at a healthy 6lbs adult weight. His parents are national show champions, and the breeder has a good reputation for breeding them (champions). This makes me very proud. I don't know why, after all none of that was my doing... and I have no intention of showing him anyway! Louis is named after King Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King. He was the king of France for most of the 17th century and transformed life at the court of Versailles so that everything revolved around him. As a history nut, I thought the name would be quite fitting! So, without further ado... Meet Louis! (He's the one on the left... Please ignore my messy hair) |

| He is adorable & congrats! He's still gonna be pretty young mid May, 8 weeks? When they leave mom before 12 weeks, they can have more problems with socialization, bite inhibition, and that young, they have more problems with hypoglycemia, so read up on this site because there is lots of useful information that will come in quite handy for when you take sweet Louis home. Welcome to YT, and keep us updated on his progress!

| Thanks! He really is a cutie and very sweet. I've been doing research for over a year (you could say I'm obsessed!) and found that opinions are very mixed - some say never before 12 wks, others say never after 8 wks. In my case it was straightforward: his breeder always lets them go at about 9 weeks which will be his age when I get him. |

| Congrats!! I know you stated you have found mixed reviews but coming from somebody that has two one taken at 12 weeks and the other at 8 weeks, I in my personal experience think that if the breeder will keep him a little longer it would help and especially since you are a first time yorkie owner. But if not you have us here to help advise

| Congratulations on your new Yorkie and welcome to YT. I have like Alisha gotten them at 9 and 12 weeks my Laddy who I got at 9 weeks did great but does have a lot of issues with seperation anxiety and Kyra is great except for storms she has severe anxiety with that. I wish you the best there is nothing like the love you recieve from a Yorkie. Do be sure to keep some Nutri-cal for hypoglycemic attacks. They tend to have some issues with sugar levels at that young age.

| Oh he is so very handsome!!! Louis is a lucky little guy. I know you still have a month to do research, and boy oh boy you will feel no matter how much you do it won't be enough I know I didn't ... but all is well now. I got my Remy at about the same age and she is great!! One thing I did have, other dogs to socialize with. I am betting it won't be long before you have more yorkies!!!!!

| Your little Yorkie is so precious and I know in my heart that he will change your life for the better. Yorkies are just magical little creatures who move in and take over and you love it. Take all the pictures you can and share all of them as this little prince grows up. No matter what your breeder is saying, most widely-recognized authorities on dog health and wellness, behavior and breeding do recommend that puppies stay with the mother through at least the 12th week, so that during early brain imprinting of fear and other emotions, growth and brain development, they have the calming influence of mom and the comfort of their birth-home to ease them through these early weeks and help their brains learn through her interactions, teachings and direction and not that of strangers in new setting they are unfamiliar with. Changing homes can be very stressful to any dog but you can imagine how tough it is on a baby one. Anything you can do to help a little one through this time with the least stress can benefit the baby - and you in the long run. If the breeder will, keeping that baby a few more weeks could really help him get his best start possible in life. For those that do bring very young and very tiny dogs home early, be certain that you are aware of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and how to treat it as you rush the dog to the ER vet. If you are gone for prolonged periods, be sure that someone checks on the baby during the day just to be on the safe side. With a name like Louis the Great, it is likely that you think he is going to be one special Yorkie and from his pix, I think you are right. I don't know if you have had a Yorkie before or not, but if not, just sit back and be prepared for a very special pet - a personal dog, one that will give you all of its attention and need a lot of time from you to have its best life. They just love human interaction and involvement - can never be happy just lying about as people live busy lives outside the home so be sure to give little Louis lots of "mommie" time and enjoy every moment that you two have together. Another thing, I swear Yorkies love for you to talk to them. Don't know how much they understand but I'm beginning to believe it's every word!!! The longer I have Tibbe the more he knows what I'm talking about and will get down and go toward what room I'm talking about going to or if I'm talking of going to "work", he starts to snort, etc. So be prepared to talk to Louis and have him understand you in time to some extent. If nothing else, they associate the sounds we say with what we do but boy, they know and will anticipate you. Tibbe loves to get up and down off the couch before me just about the time I'm thinking to going to do something or get something. If you don't have a doggie ramp or doggie steps, it is good to have one at the couch and bed for your baby to learn how to use to avoid repetitive joint injury from jumping up and down all day for years. There are inexpensive and expensive ones and they all work well to help a small dog stay healthier and safe orthopedically. Yorkies also can have many dental problems so learn all that you can about tooth brushing and a yearly dental cleaning. That's all I can think of right now but enjoy little Louis the Great. Looking forward to watching this little Aussie grow up!!!

| I got my Yorkie, Bella, at 8 weeks. She had one or two mild episodes of hypoglycemia during her first week, but I was prepared and she got through that okay. Now she is at 12 weeks and completely potty trained. Be conscientious, positive, and well-prepared, and the Sun King will do great! |
