Are the pups nursing? Are they sleeping well, no crying and fussing for food..if so all should be well...milk lets down as the pups nurse. I have seen a mom nurse a litter of 6 fat, healthy pups to 6 weeks and I could not squeeze a drop of milk from a teat..but they could.

They act like they are ok when she is in the crate and as soon as I let her out to use the restroom they start crying for her... I don't know if they are hungary or if they just want her near all the time... I started mommy on goat milk this mourning I read on the internet that it will help but the vet said nothing will...

If they are sleeping, bellys look filled out, shiny, warm and only really fuss and cry when Mom leaves..I say they are getting enough milk. If they nurse, act fussy and root for another nipple..they may be hungry...but I have never had a Mom go dry at 1 or 2 weeks..not even 3 or 4...milk may have lessened as pup grew...but there was ample... Your vet is a world of encouragement...I am surprised he/she did not know how thsi milk thing works...even with human babies, the milk flows as they nurse, right...mom hears the baby cry and the milk lets down, baby nurse and milk lets down..dogs are no different..

Another good way to tell if the pups are getting enough milk is to weigh them several times a day. I use a good digital scale that weighs in grams and a chart to keep track of puppy weights.(It's a postal scale I bought at Staples). I weigh the puppies at least twice daily for the first week, daily until 2 weeks old and then weekly until 12 weeks to make sure they are eating enough and growing well. If you can weigh them and see them gaining weight (in grams) you can know they are eating well. I use a goats milk mixture for momma's that I think could use it and it helps to increase their intake, especially their fluid intake. It takes lots of fluids during lactation to produce milk. My "recipe" is 1 can goats milk mixed with 1 can of water, a pinch of salt substitute, and a tablespoon of Karo syrup. Good luck with your puppies, Teresa

It is normal for pups to cry when mom leave the whelping box. When they get a little older they will start feeling more secure when she leaves the box. The mothers milk will replenish itself every two hours. As long as the pups are gaining and acting content then you probably have nothing to worry about. I always leave a small fleece blanket with the pups and that gives them more security and mom can cover them if she chooses to. The most important thing is to make sure mom is getting about 4 good meals a day of a quality puppy food. Her last meal should be around bedtime (10 p.m.) Too much of the goats milk might give her diarrhea. I mix a quality dry puppy food with a little canned Pedigree puppy food and I hand feed my mommas if necessary. I have never had to give whelping pudding or goats milk and all my moms have always had plenty of milk, some to them too much milk. Good luck with your babies.

Great advice above!!! I was always worried that Paris had no milk because when I squeezed her nipples nothing came out but napoleon's weight and happiness was indication that he was always getting enough! So like everyone said above if they look happy, bellies full and coats shiny than she probably is producing! Get a scale because at the very least that will ease your mind! Good luck! :-)

Senior Yorkie Talker | question Our puppies are two weeks old today. I was worried also about not seeing Momma full of Milk but the puppies gained weight everyday. I weigh in ounces(i hope thats ok). Now my concern is diarrhea. One possibly two puppies have diarrhea. Mom was sick with a uterine infection so wouldnt eat much. She is much better now. Now is when she started eating puppy food. Any advice on diarrhea from puppies? Could it be from Mom starting soft and dry puppy food? Thanks!!
