Health First!!! Brianna, I am new to Yorkie talk, but I have owned yorkies for ten years now, and just from my experience, the less they weigh, the more health problems they have. I am not saying that there are NO healthy little ones....because I am sure that there are some tiny little ones that do fine...I am just saying that the breed standard is up to 7 pounds and when they are bred smaller, they are weaker and generally have more issues. Not to mention more deaths from accidents (falling off the bed, stepping on them, etc.) So, if you DO find one that small...be prepared to love and keep it COME WHAT MAY....because by nature they will have problems that larger, more sturdy yorkies just rarely have. I wish you the best in your serach....

I personally do not think that there is any evidence to suggest that the smaller yorkies, 3-4lb especially, are any more prone to health issues than the the 5-7 lb ones. If there are issues, they usually occur when they are newborn and so it is good to let the breeder keep them as long as possible but at least to 12 weeks to make sure they are past that critical stage. If you are talking about a micro-mini who won't get to 2 lbs, there may be some truth to that because they do not always develop completely and tend to have more open fontanels and have a tendency toward low blood sugar their whole lives. I think you do need to do your research and learn how to detect any health problems in your yorkie and have the emergency things on hand in case you have a problem, but I would say this whether you are getting a 2 lber or a 7 lber. I have three "tinies" in my family and I have done a lot of research and you do have to be careful with them but you have do the same with any yorkie because they are all "small" as far as dogs go. Good luck finding the Puppy of your Dreams!!

i agree with socalyorkilvr, even though many smaller yorkies have health problems doesnt mean that all of them do. i have had yorkies all my life and all of them have been 2-4 pounds. a few of them did have health problems but for the most part they were all healthy. thank you for being concerned about the yorkie's health, but i dont agree with ur theory. but if thats how you feel about it, then thats ok with me. but anyways still looking for a yorkie if anyone has any more ideas.

small size = sickness? not I had a 2 1/2 pound yorkie and also gave a small one 2 1/2 pounder to my mother in-law for company and love, "Benji." We never had any problem with them - health wise. Benji did like to tease hth toads in the backyard from time to time in Florida and would have to get a shot of atropine. Mom would always check for the toads and not see any, but Benji could always find them. But we never had any health problems. They both lived out their years and just died of old age. So to me - small size does not matter.

Lots of love in a little package.... Just be careful. I know that I was only speaking from my experience and I have never owned such a tiny one, but only spoken to those who have, so I am glad to hear that small babies do not always have those problems. One lady that I spoke with (actually her husband) said that her 3lb yorkie fell off the bed and broke its neck. Another person had been cooking and she turned around to walk and slightly kicked her yorkie baby in the tummy, and it died from that. I have also been told they are very nervous and shaky the smaller they are, but it could be that a sweater would help that if they are just cold. So be carfeul buying and be careful owning, ok? Yesterday my husband was leaving to go somewhere and the 3 babies were with me in the back yard and he came walking back there and I said "why aren't you leaving?" and he said - I did not see the dogs and so I did not want to pull out without checking where they were" So Sweet!!! He puts up with my little "gang" and I love him for it!! We also warn each other if we are in the recliner and the dogs are under there. Anyway, Best wishes in your search!! Kemfy

Male Yorkshire Terrier I have a male who is a 4 1/2 months old and weighs 3 Lbs. His mother is a light blue with a clear gold. Dad is a darker blue with a darker gold. The mom weighs arounf five pounds and the dad is 4 lbs. The puppy is up todate on all his shots and has checked out healthy by the vet. He would make a wonderful pet or a stud for the right breeding program. I also have a newborn male male out of a different 5 lb mom and a 4 lb male. Both of these parents are very light blue ( some would call silver ) with bright clear gold. Pupies from the previous breeding of these two produced puppies all in the 3 1/2 lb to 4 lb range. Baby would not be able to leave until 9 weeks old. Will have tail docked, dew claws removed and two sets of shots from the vet. Both of these boys will be AKC registered with open registration. I give a one year health warranty on congenital defects. I live in Indianapolis Indiana Thank you Wnalegria
