As far as the smell, both my dogs smell equally bad after jumping in a puddle, eating cat poop, snooping through wet leaves & rolling on everything stinky in the yard & both of them smell equally as good after a bath. I heard that yorkies tend to have a musty odor and bad breath, I have not experienced that yet.Good luck with your decision. You might want to visit some breeders homes of both breeds before you make your decision. That way you can check out how the adult dogs are and which personality feels good to you.

| The smell question was something I had asked..only because in my research of both the Maltese and Yorkie breed, there were many comments that I had read, from various places stating that the Maltese never smells like a dog, they tend to have a "sweet" smell. While the Yorkie will have that "doggy" smell. I don't know either way because I haven't owned either. This is why I posted the question, to see if anybody with experience with both breeds had noticed a difference in the scents......I'm just looking to get both ends of the spectrum here, and I thank everybody for giving me all this information! |

| I would definitely vote for Yorkies. I spend at least a few hours a week with my boyfriend's two Maltese littermates and they are two little snobs that hate my little Yorkie. They're extremely spoiled and 10lbs overweight. I have a biased opinion, because I am sure that not all Maltese are like these two I described. I am actually considering getting a Maltese as a playmate for Stewie, but I think he may be "too much" for a Maltese. He's very energetic.

Chester goes potty outside and chesely is trained for both but we keep her in for winter as her coat get to dirty in te snow. If we let chester out to potty out back he will stay on the stairs waiting for her to come out and play. She will do the same thing as well. It is really cute. I don't think the maltese were snobs they are just not used to your puppy yet a few more vists and they will all be friends.

I think they are just saying that or maybe the person that said that does not bath there dog. I think the maltese holds the shampoo sent longer as it has more hair but also when chesley are maltese gets dirty.. she both smell like she need bath. Pick the breed that best fits you. I love both our dogs. So I cannot say or point you in either direction

| I have a Maltese and am getting my Yorkie this afternoon. My Malt breaks the rules when it comes to the typical Malt personality. He is super high strung, very yappy and not very calm at all. Don't get me wrong, I love him to bits and pieces but he is a handful. The white coat is something to keep in mind.. the upkeep is a chore. Also depending on the coat type, Malts can get tons of mats. My Malt has a cottony coat and he mats just walking around. One of the biggest problems I have with him is that he likes to just hang out on his pee pad after he's gone potty so he gets yellow stained paws, so I have to wash his feet at least twice a week. He doesn't go outside very often so I don't really worry about the rest of him getting dirty. But a lot of Malts have tear staining and that is a huge problem and very hard to get rid of once they have it. One of my tips is to use stainless steel bowls and filtered water.. it makes a difference in the amount of staining my Malt had. And as to the doggy smell, I can't speak for Yorkies yet, but my Malt does smell a little doggy after a long walk outside when it's hot out. He gets kind of a sweaty smell to him if he hasn't had a bath in a while. So any dog, even a Malt, will stink without regular bathing. I'd recommend trying to spend a little bit of time with both kinds of breeds by visiting some breeders.. that will give you an idea of their personalities. Good luck with your decision!

| The Maltese are both extremely unsocial and are very protective over each other. Stewie has spent the night there a few times and has spent countless hours with them. They just don't like him, even when he is minding his own business. And of course, my boyfriend's mom is saying "well maybe they sense something evil about Stewie. You never know". Yeah right.

gee that not a nice comment ""well maybe they sense something evil about Stewie." I Guess they are snooty, maybe because they are litter mates. I guess the good thing is at lease they are not growling at him. poor stewie.... . I guess he is better off you don't want him to be snooty like them

| Chester - The growl and lunge at him. It's ridiculous. They get very aggressive when he's around.

| i had 2 maltese girls both were 4lbs each and i looved them so much they were so easy to train and behaved really well. i had to give them up though. but i think thier great dogs too and i really didn't have to worry about thier coat too much because they were always indoors.as far as the tear stains go yes you will have to keep up with it but it's really worth it if your patient. now i have my coco and in comparison of the two coco is much easier to maintain. because of his coat color. so i hope that this helps you. |

What we did , was i held chelsey and my husban held chester. with in one night they were gettting along great. chelsey also did this high pitch sound again in pet smart. I don't think she realized these are other dogs. I had to walk through pet smart with chelsey's eyes covered. What if you try to leave somthing there with your puppies sent on it. Then hopefully the next time your there they will recignized him . Or try introducing then one by one 5 min play time with both of you holding them so the malts don't feel like they have to pretect there turff. I hope this helps... maybe others have some suggestions.

| I have had both a yorkie and a maltese. I had the maltese years ago and I don't know if it was just that particulat dog but Icould not get close to him. and he hiked his leg EVERY WHERE. he was always dirty and he smelled. it was very hard to keep him clean. My yorkie I have now does have accidents but not all the time. and I am so close to her I could never give her up. so through my experience I would go with a yorkie.
