Yorkie or Maltese? Ok..I posted this question on a Maltese board. I'm trying to get everybodies opinion on this. I am researching both the Maltese and the Yorkie and desperately trying to decide which I prefer. I would like to hear from anyone who maybe owns both or just happens to have experience with both breeds. If I could just get your thoughts and feelings towards which breed you prefer to own...I am having trouble making this decision...hopefully everybodies input will help

i thought about a maltese when i was looking and decided on a yorkie because of their coat color.... a maltese has a white coat that i just CAN NOT deal with, i think it would probably end up brown in five minuits... AND the "tear stains" are more noticable on a white coat.....

Thank you for your response. I do have to say, that the tear stain thing is a deffinate turn off to me even if you constantly clean them, it can still be a problem. I guess I have to say the biggest thing that has me thinking about getting a Maltese is that they are hypoallergenic and they don't have a "doggy" smell. Other then that, I am leaning towards the Yorkie, but I still can't be sure...I'll have to keep on researching and hopefully recieve more responses to this post

Althought the Maltese are cute lil furballs.. I picked the Yorkie because of the same thing as above . The white coat (that will get dirty brown in 5 minutes), and the Tear stains that are way too noticable on White. I do prefer the Yorkie now, because I own two.. two little sweethearts! for me they were easy as cake to potty train, crate train and just got along together great.

| Also (was) my debate... I also debated between a yorkie and a maltese - and my husband and I decided on a yorkie. I love the maltese color and the curly tail, agh, I wanted one so badly - and still hope that one day I can get one (but not anytime soon). We chose a yorkie because they are (supposedly) so much smarter and quicker to learn things. Both my husband and I have always wanted a smart dog to teach all sorts of cute tricks (and we did! Check out these online videos we made of him!!) I can imagine that the beautiful white maltese's coat could get dirty - easily, well, it would show dirt, more. But best of luck to you in your decision. I know whatever dog you choose, you'll fall so in love with him/her, you could never imagine life without!

In people extra...it says yorkies are in maltese are out. "The yorkie is one of the worls smallest breeds and very smart" Then it says "The maltese is out due to upkeep. The dog is white so frequent grooming is a must"

Yorkies and Maltese Ack! We have both and of course love all these little ones! Our Cali - the Maltese was our first and yes the white hair will get dirty and the tears do get kinda bad BUT all you need to do is what we did! Get both! Our Yorkies clean our Maltese's eyes ALL the time for her. People always ask how we get her so white! LOL So we have a perfect little family all looking out for each other! LOL

Thank you...all of these opinions and experiences are wonderful to hear about. I do however have another question to ask about the "yorkie or maltese" topic....I've been reading on the "maltese" board, that Maltese have a "sweet" smell about them....while a Yorkie tends to stink? I don't know if this is a stinky stink...or just your regular doggy scent? I was thinking, if both breeds, do not have an under coat, and don't shed because they have "hair" and not "fur"....then wouldn't ya think both breeds should have a pleasant smell?.....If anyone knows the answer to this I'd be very grateful for your respose.... thanks againn

| I chose a yorkie for the SAME reason. I was debating between a maltese and a yorkie too. The white coats require a lot of upkeep. As for being stinky, my Esme usually doesn't go outside to grass more that 1-2 times a week (she is inside trained) and when she does go outside to play, I bathe her right after, so she smells fresh all the time! I can't imagine malteses never stink, it's a dog just like any other!

Yorkie's have a dog scent, well because they are dogs.. i don't think they have a distinct smell link a skunk or anything, i mean when i first got Ginger, i could just tell they never gave her a bath or anything.. but after a good rub-a-dub-dub in the tub, she smelled as good as me

We have both a maltese and a yorkie. The yorkie is my husbands and the maltese is mine. The reason i say that is I am more layed back and my husband is go, go , go. The way I look at is Yorkies are for ever puppies, if you have the energy and handel your puppy not doing everything when you ask then that is your puppy, they are very smart but do what they want when they want it. This is my second maltese and I find them to be very calm dogs with engery when required. Yes there is maintance but so do yorkies. They both should be brushed the same mount, they both have tear staining. you just don't notice it on a yorkie because of the colour. The diffence is the personalities. Chester is three and still acts like a puppy he dashes throu our home he does not walk. Chesley our maltese will walk unless she is with chester. Chelsey is like my little shadow walking behind me every where. I follow Chester he does not wait for me. He is his own person/dog Tip if you get a yorkie or maltese.. I recommend bless the beast shampoo to minimize the upkeep , no matts and less brushing. In addition, so you are aware the personalities of both breeds are completely differnt.. don't let pictures in book in magizes confuse you... they are nothing a like. So please do your rearch on line contact some really good breeders and vist with no money in hand that way you will not make a commitment.
