I will admit that our previous dog when we lived in Chicago was not on heartworm preventatives. However, Chicago sprays the living daylights out of the area with mosquito repellent. Trucks drive down the street spraying chemicals.

We are in Virginia now and I have met many people at the vet's office whose dogs had heartworms. I don't want to risk this dreadful and preventable condition. Also, the preventatives protect against a lot of other worms.

I am all for reducing the amount chemicals and whatever i give to my dogs but Heartworm Preventatives is not one of them..
We live in Maine and have lots of Mosquitos , even into October so my Dogs are Heartgaurd year round..

I don't live far from you and have been to Cornell many, many, many times. I think you should go to Cornell Univ. Vet hosp. and ask them how many cases they have seen....and ask them if they think you should NOT give your dogs heartworm meds.

I know of 2 dogs who were there....1 lived in Bath and 1 lived in Elmira...seriously, you need to reconsider this.

All I'm going to say on this thread is that a rescue has every right to set the requirements for adoption that they feel are in the best interest of the population they take in.

I will say this main point- I have worked with animals many years, in vet hospitals and shelters and through school. I have seen many cases of heartworm positive dogs, too many to even keep track of. I have seen ZERO cases of dogs that are ill or have had liver problems from taking heartworm preventative prescribed by a vet.

I agree, heartworm preventatives are essential, your area is not heartworm free and though you have not had a case so far does not mean you will never have your dog infested. I get bit by mosquitoes in my house all the time! No reputable rescue or breeder would give a dog to someone not willing to protect it from this preventable disease. I hope you read the information provided and rethink your stance on this issue.

When we love our dogs and feel so passionate about our beliefs, I always think it's a good thing. Sometimes though, I do wonder what all these medications do to our dogs? I sometimes worry that 50 years from now, we will discover that some of these medications we use on our dogs are the reason there is so much cancer with them now a days. There are many people who passionately believe that these medications are doing irreparable harm. I'm not saying I believe that but I am saying that it's always good to continue questioning and learning. I thought the following link was interesting and worth sharing.
