I will admit that our previous dog when we lived in Chicago was not on heartworm preventatives. However, Chicago sprays the living daylights out of the area with mosquito repellent. Trucks drive down the street spraying chemicals.
We are in Virginia now and I have met many people at the vet's office whose dogs had heartworms.
I don't want to risk this dreadful and preventable condition. Also, the preventatives protect against a lot of other worms.
