| Those are they colours I am looking for. I love the black/ dark steel colour. It is mostly the rusty red I am just in LOVE with. My male is starting to go the dark steel colour and I like that but he is tan. |

| This thread is the first I've heard that coats are different. I was wondering why Zaccheus hasn't changed color at all yet, and his coat is cotton. His parents and all his siblings are all silk, so I thought it had something to do with his medical conditions and being hand fed from birth. I thought I had done something wrong. Of course I have no plans to breed him, and intend to have him neutered very soon, but I'm glad to know that I didn't do something terribly wrong to bring on his unique-ness.

I love the deep rich gold with the red tone as well but I don't breed for it because it isn't correct conformationally. As you can see from the pic it's a beautiful color though.

Thank you, once again for your explaination. Most of my experience with breeding and genetics is from horses, but genetics is genetics. I understand and appreciate your thought process in breeding your Roxie to help strengthen your color. | |

| There is more info on livestock genetics than canine so they have come to be very helpful. I'm hoping that my breeding plan is a good plan. It's sound on paper but we won't know for sure until we are a couple of generations out.

I've got into this a couple of years ago and still stand by my convictions. I breed for HEALTH first and foremost, the color is secondary. We have some of the most beautiful yorkies but they will never see the show ring because of the color. The standards for yorkies are needed for showing. Those who don't "produce" the standard are frowned upon and at times have been put down as unrepeatable breeders. I will take my faulty colors on a healthy dog any day. Besides that, not everyone wants a standard yorkies but prefer the more unusual. How do you think Parti and Biewers got started? They didn't just suddenly appear one day. At first they were also frowned upon, suggesting that they were "faulty" or not yorkies because they didn't meet the standards set forth by those who show. But now they are becoming accepted. I hope to see in my lifetime the acceptance of blond, chocolate, red, and black as "acceptable" colors. Until that time, I will continue to breed my yorkies for health first and take whatever color that happens by nature. I'm not trying to start an argument here, you can find lots more argumentive threads and that's where they should stay. Just trying to answer your question in my opinion.
