Hi, I hope this is okay, but I wanted to bump up this thread as I'm still open to adopting another Yorkie (male or female of any age) as a companion for my little Yorkie/Chi, Tika. I'm located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - a three-hour drive from North Dakota. On the rare occasion I leave Tika home alone, she cries like a baby the entire time. She loves cats and other small dogs, but attacks larger dogs like a pitbull (which is comical because she is so tiny). It took a couple weeks for Tika to adjust to my mother's large, overweight pug, T-Bone. They are now buddies. However Tika has always been good to my sister's teacup poodle who is the same size as Tika. Ideally I'm looking to take in a rescue and can provide unlimited veterinary services (due to a business trade organization I belong to). I cannot afford a large adoption fee. Warm Regards, Jamie

Thanks Sugar's Mom. The only problem with her is the $600 adoption fee - that I am unable to afford. If the puppy's current owners agreed to adopt her to me there would be a transportation fee in addition to the $600 rehoming fee. Although the pup is young and likely very healthy, I would insist on doing a full diagnostic with my vet to make sure the little one is 100% healthy. My ideal dog would be one who comes from a family who isn't asking for an adoption fee, but wants to know the dog is going to a good home. I could provide regular updates and photographs on a long-term basis. If the dog has health problems, I can provide veterinarian services through my business's barter system. I wish I had as much cash as I do barter credit (nearly $20,000 in barter credit from doing four websites recently at $5,000 each).

Jamie. I think I may have mentioned this, but have you looked into rescue. YES, more then likely there would be some kind of adoption fee - usually between $250 - $400 with $400 being more common but your dog/pup has already been vetted, shots and spay and neutered PLUS you know for sure the health of your Yorkie. Finding someone that will give you a Yorkie for free is almost unlikely. Most people feel that giving away for free does not ensure a good home. Not saying you won't provide one, just stating reccomendations that are made to weed out people looking for dogs to use at labratories etc. If you do find a Yorkie (such as the link Sugar's mom provided) you could make contact with the owner and speak to them about your situation. A lot of families are more interested in finding a GOOD home first and foremost and may work with you with the fee and or just give you the dog after of course checking out your references and ensuring that you do infact have all the credits for free vet care. In a lot of cases, people are just following the reccomendations of charging a fee to make sure that the dog does not end up in the wrong hands. You''d be surprised to know how many labratories send people underhandedly to find FREE dogs so they can use them in labratories. Best of luck. Elaine

As a good person who has a loving home and great environment for another Yorkie, I have to believe that the right dog will come along. Yes, there are unscrupulous people who will sell dogs to labs or use them to train dogs involved in dog fighting, but I am not one of those people. Both Annie and Tika came into my life without large adoption fees and I believe another dog will come along at the right time. Annie was given to me because of the loving home and vet services I am able to provide. Tika was adopted to me for a nominal fee of $60 and I am so thankful she came to me because the rescue vet gave her a 100% clean bill of health and I just learned she needs a $3,000 surgery for knee problems on her hind legs. I am an open book and willing to provide references, contact information about the vet I use and regular updates on how the dog is doing with photographs. I'm not looking for a free Yorkie, but one that may have health problems and can take advantage of the vet services I can offer. Just because I prefer not to pay an adoption fee for a young puppy doesn't mean I am looking for a free dog. The money will instead be directed into ensuring the dog has the best possible vet care, food, supplies and anything else the dog needs.

Jamie. I wasn't suggesting that you were not being honest. I was just suggesting that just because someone is asking an adoption fee does not mean that it's written in stone. As I said a lot of people will place their dog with an adoption fee not because they want money but because they feel that this is the safest way to be sure that their dog does not end up as a lab rat. What I was suggesting is to not rule out the dogs with an adoption fee because sometimes once the family speaks to the potential adopter and knows that their dog will be provided a living home with vet care etc. that they will end up waving the asking fee. Many years ago my parents bought my boys their first dog. It was a Golden Retriever and we had not idea that our little guy had asthma triggered by dog hair. He was very very sick from Bogart and we had no choice but to find a home for him. We had him advertised in the paper with a price and had him sold but in the end would not follow through with the sale because he would be crated all day while the person worked. In the end we found a family through our vet that had just lost their old Sheepdog and in the end we chose to lose the $700 that was spent on him and just give this family Bogart because we knew he'd have the perfect home. This is all I was saying. That you should not rule out those asking a fee. Unfortuanetly while you may be upright, many many are not and Labs look for free dogs and they send people posing as a person looking for a family dog and these poor people end up handing their dog over to what they believe is a good home, only to find later that the dog ended up in a labratory and this is why in a lot of cases a person will put a high fee on their pet, but sometimes once they talk to you the fee disappears. I admire you are looking to rescue. I have four that are rescues. Elaine

Thanks Elaine. I appreciate the advice and understand now what you mean. However, given that I'm a very proud person, I'm just wondering how a tactful way to approach somebody advertising a dog that is asking for a $600 or $800 adoption fee. Having been through the situation yourself, how would you approach somebody if you were me. I just don't want to offend anyone because I know Yorkies are very expensive to purchase. I look forward to your advice.

Hi again Jamie. I think your best bet is to keep your eye here on YT. Call me nieve but I think that most that take the time to actually locate a Yorkie site to post their Yorkie for rehoming are more likely to be less interested in money and more interested in finding their dog/pup a new home. I know that less then a year ago TLC found her little yorkie / Maltese who was less then a year old and posted as free. I think TLC has her in her avatar and named her Cuddles. And, I know I've seen quite a few postings in the past year where people were looking to rehome their dog and said that the fee was completely negotiable. That is a a good sign that money is not the issue. I would scan and keep looking and when you see such a post either call if the number is listed or email and explain the home you can provide and medical care etc. and the situation. It's not really a matter of pride. Many can pay for a dog but just refuse to buy, they'd rather rescue. I'm not rich but I'm comfortable yet I do not feel comfortable buying a pup. When looking I always looked to rescue first. Also, don't rule out rescue. Often rescue loses money on a dog. Lilly my little rescue was 13 weeks when we got her. I paid a $400 adoption fee and that included her pediatric spay, shots and medical. When I picked her up I saw her papers and the rescue had $900 into her. A lot of cases rescue cannot afford to get the medical care needed on some that come in. I would scout petfinder and if you find a little Yorkie that needs vetting or they are looking for donations for contact them and talk to them. It does not hurt. You could even look into fostering a Yorkie with the idea of adopting them. Rescue will always give their foster families first rights. I'm sure a rescue would love to place a pup or young adult that needs medical with a home that is willing to pay for it. I wish you the best of luck in your search. Oh and one place to look may be www.puppymillrescue.com. They take in puppymill dogs - some just pups but most need medical and these rescues really just cannot afford the cost. Elaine

Thank you so much for the words of wisdom and links. I'm going to review the ads and personally contact the owners of the dogs that would be a good fit for my home. I'm also going to keep active on Yorkie Talk because it truly is an incredible resource. I've learned more about dogs in my month here than I have in my entire life!

| Jamie... I know it's puppyfind.com, but I saw this little girl and thought of you... she's here in Oklahoma so if you decided on her, maybe we could put together some kind of YT "yorkie transport train" (starting with me!) and we could get her home to you without shipping charges! http://www.puppyfind.com/view_listin...22262946337ed2

You have been given wonderful advice and I know you and your daugther are also wonderful people. You are right, the 'right dog' will come along. Don't give up, look through the Ads EVERY day, spread your word about what you have to provide, and then simply ask. I would just lay it all out and let them decide. The worst they could say is 'sorry but no' - if that's the case then you move onto the next Yes, Cuddles was advertised as Free. She was approx. 15 months old, a Yorkie/Maltese mix. She was about 3.5 lbs. She was healthy except she had leather ear. In the end, the husband was upset about the Free part and they decided they wanted $300 for her. I agreed and flew (paying $250 rt) to go get her. She was BEYOND UNDER WEIGHT. She was skin and bones, NO FAT, NO MUSCLE - Her little hip bones were protruding. But she was such a cutie, a little love bug! She was well worth it and she is about 5 lbs. now - thank goodness, she really needed it! About 1 month ago, I found a friend of mine a 2 yr. female here on YT. She had demodex and leather ear, b/c of this she wasn't able to get UTD on shot and she also needed to be spayed. Well, her adoption fee was a little less than Cuddles, but her new Mom is so in love with her. She is almost all better and is going to be spayed soon. Everyone is happy with this little girl too! It's just a matter of timing. You've gotta look everyday, b/c they can go so quickly Again, I wish you nothing but positive thoughts for your search for new little one.

| Thank You ... Thank You ... Thank You ... I have written a few personal letters to the owners of the various dogs on www.petfinder.com and this sweet little girl, Holly, advertised here: http://www.puppyfind.com/view_listin...262 946337ed2 Here is the letter I wrote in regards to Holly ... Hi Gail, I am writing because I may be able to offer a loving home to Holly. Self employed, I work from the comfort of home so as to be a hands-on mother to my six-year-old daughter, Hannah, and also full-time mommy to our four-year-old Yorkie/Chi, Tika. You can see a video of the two together on You Tube by clicking here: I own a house with a fenced in backyard and can provide references if you wish. I have also attached some photographs of my very spoiled Yorkie mix, Tika. I am passionately in love with the Yorkshire Terrier breed and have experience in rescuing two Yorkshire Terriers (who were both seized from extremely abusive and neglectful situations). One of the Yorkies died from the extreme abuse and neglect she went through in her previous home. The other Yorkie/Chi, Tika, is a four-year-old sweetheart and a beloved member of our family. I would like to adopt another Yorkie as a companion for Tika and as another dog to spoil. I am in a unique situation in that I can receive unlimited veterinary care, medicine and dog supplies/food because my business belongs to a barter exchange where businesses trade services with each other (without spending cash). So as an example, I build websites for $5,000 each in barter currency - which gives me $5,000 in barter credit to spend with other business that belong to the exchange each month. There is a veterinarian and pet store that are members of my the barter exchange, allowing me to obtain the best veterinary care and supplies available. With this in mind, I will be honest in saying that my home-based business provides financially for my family and leaves very little extra. Although we don't have a lot of extra money at the end of each month, I always have plenty of work lined up from my barter exchange. If you are willing to consider adopting Holly into a very loving home without an adoption fee, I can provide regular updates and photographs letting you know how she is doing. If you are interested, we could discuss transportation options since I am in Winnipeg, Canada - a three hour drive North of North Dakota. My current Yorkie mix, Tika, was adopted from the Pennington County Humane Society in Thief River Falls, Minnesota so I am knowledgeable about bringing a dog from the U.S. to Canada. A current rabies vaccination is required as well as administrative fee of $30, which I could cover. I look forward to your response. | In the past, a couple of people have offered to trade a website for a puppy. This may be something you could offer. Of course, you're website are obviously worth a lot. But the trade could be worth it in lieu of cash. Just an idea, I would have considered it if I had puppies available right now. |

Susan ... that's a brilliant idea! Thank you. If you were here in person, I would give you a huge hug. I have not had much luck with trying to find a rescue in my offer to take on all veterinary bills for a dog that needs a home. I have written custom letters to dozens of rescue organizations and people looking to rehome their Yorkies with no luck. Everyone wants an adoption fee (which is understandable). As my way of giving back, I actually just volunteered my services to design a new website for the Pennington County Humane Society in Thief River Falls - where I adopted Tika. The operations manager, Dawn, was such a nice person and working so hard with so little money so I thought it would be a nice thing to do. They are very happy with it. It's still under construction, but the URL address is www.pchumanesociety.com. I'm going to create a separate link on another page and see if anyone is willing to do a trade - a Yorkie in return for the services of designing a website. If anyone happens to read this and would like to see other examples of my website design work, simply go to www.pizazcreative.com.
