| Showing with a undocked tail... I have been doing some web surfing lately and have noticed that there has been some Yorkhire Terriers with TAILS in the ring at some shows. I am not aware of changes in the AKC confirmation regulations and couldn't find any information on it. Are there some kennel clubs that accept this? Is it an international difference? Just curious...... i do know that there have been some breeds that have changed the "standard" as far as tails are concerned.... I also would be curious to know what some of our fav YT show dog owners/ handlers opinions are on this one.......

| The FCI standard is different than the ACK standard It states: Tail Undocked: Plenty of hair, darker blue in colour than rest of body, especially at end of tail. Carried a little higher than level of back. As straight as possible. Length to give a well balanced appearance. Docking is also illegal in many European countries. YORKSHIRE TERRIER BREEDERS - Yorkie show and puppy news from February 2012 Here you can see most of them with undocked tails. |

| It's getting easier-- Since the standard changed all over Europe a few years ago the US judges have been encouraged by the AKC to use their own discretion as to how to deal with docked vs undocked tails. Most complied by simply ignoring the undocked dog, awarding them very rarely. This appears to be changing fast and I understand YTCA is reconsidering the standard because US breeders are hurt by being excluded from international competition with their docked dogs. It's been interesting. I've been building my line mainly on imports, hence there have been lots of undocked dogs in my kennel and I've taken a liking to the long tail. Boy, didn't I take some bashings on this board over that.

I used to be one that preferred docked tails, thinking they gave a yorkie a more balanced appearance. After having Razz with his natural tail, I've changed my opinion and believe both styles have their merits.

| I really don't understand the reason why there are 2 different standards... |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Standards for all breeds are established with-in the country of origin for any breed; for the YT that would be England. All countries have some version of this process when recognizing "new breeds" for registration in their country. Usually the Standard that will be recognized is the standard issued by the country of origin. Then the breed is allowed to show under "miscellaneous class" until full breed recognition is earned. Once full breed recognition is earned, that particular National club within that particular country can and will at times change the standard. This is a very hot topic with-in all breed clubs, and it is not very easy to change a standard....and so IMO that is correct. In I believe it was 2007 for most European countries, who are members of FCI, docking was not "allowed" or banned. All the standards had to be changed to accomadate this. It is a real "issue" with North American Breeders, for if they should want to show in Europe, they need to keep the tails natural. Currently it is my understanding that Yes you can Finish a Dog in Canada or the USA with an uncropped tail. It might take a bit longer, but it can be done. Will you be able to special this dog? Unlikely at this point in time.

| The YTCA is not considering changing the standard for undocked tails! I've seen only a couple of yorkies in the US shown with a tail personally and those were shown by professional handlers and finished by professional handlers. As far as I know some YTCA members want breeders choice but as of now it's not being considered and won't in the near future! I personally prefer the docked tail as the yorkies I've seen with tails do not have the pretty outline as a docked tail Yorkie has but of course that is just MHO |

| This is such an interesting topic.... and thanks to all for being honest and courteous with your opinions!!! I haven't seen any undocked Yorkies up close and "personal" so I really can't say if I like the look or not. My little Seeger has a nice tailset and his tail is cut a bit longer than Shelb & Seymours...... I really like the way it looks....... Something that I will keep watching for.... it will be interesting to see if there will be more undocked tails in the ring in the future. Anyone else?

For me in the Yorkie Breed, I do not like the very short docked tails I've seen, I like a more moderate length of tail, or a natural tail. ((Shrugs)) not sure why, perhaps it is more pleasing to my eye. For my Black Russians, I do NOT like the natural tail. But once more when I buy, the dog will have a natural tail so I could compete in Europe. We can show here in Canada and the USA natural tailed dogs. That natural tail is a "menace" (smiles), Gawd does it sting when she whips you with her tail. It makes a big dog, even "bigger in longtidutional space. Also I tell you when we went hiking with her; I'd spend an hour getting twigs and bramble out of that 18" tail. Sanitarily speaking I had to figure out how to trim her to "keep the shape" but keep the anal area clear.

| Tail docking is banned here in the uk and I for one agree, I like the wag of susie's tail when she greets me, leave them with what nature gave them I say, its cruel to cut them of and many breeders use very cruel ways of cutting tails off, using the excuse that if you do them before they are 2 days old they wont feel a thing what rubbish, of course they feel pain, wouldn't you if a finger was cut off at the age of just 2 days, you probably wouldn't remember it but you would still feel it!!!! I love them with tails!! Its natures gift. |
