Dog Show

I am watching the National Dog Show on t.v right now. They just finished the toy group. I am wondering, every time I watch a dog show, why some of the handlers take the dogs off the table by the neck and tail? I am sure it does not harm the dog or they wouldn't do it, but it just bothers me something terrible. I think it looks horrible! I see some that lift them off by putting a hand under the belly, I wish all would do that. Thanks

I show and think it looks horrible too. Don't know why they do it, not sure if it doesn't hurt them. The thought of anyone grabbing the dog by the neck bothers me. Collapsed Trachea.

I guess to show how strong they are? I think I saw on Dogs 101 that some dogs like Westies have a thick strong tail and when they are ratting if they get stuck can be pulled out by the tail.

I normally put my hands under his chest and under his rear. Sometimes I put my hands under his chin but he mostly rests on my hands that is under his rear. I never pull him by his tail. Bigger dogs have stronger trachs and stronger tails than a yorkie or the smaller of the toys. I don't like when they hold them by the lead and the tail and put them off the table, it does hurt them in my opinion at least the smaller of the toys

I saw a couple also that took them off by the lead. The ones I saw it happen to today were the yorkie and maltese. It just really bothers me.

It does look like it would do some damage but I was taught that the left hand went between the dogs back legs and the right hand grasps the dog by it's jawbone. This doesn't hurt the dog or it's trachea as you are putting no pressure on the trachea at all. Plus doing it this way also strengthens the backbone. I have seen some pick dogs up from the middle as pups only to have the dog look like it was roached back.

That is exactly what I do, I just can't do it with the lead and the tail. I'm sure a lot of handlers use this method because it doesn't mess up the coat.
Also, I don't think you could do it with a braided neck piece, I'm sure most dogs would retaliate !

If the lead is placed just right under the jaw and not on the trachea you can do that but it's not always gonna fall just right....I know both handlers personally that showed the maltese and the yorkie and I can't speak for them why they did that. I've done it a couple of times but was uncomfortable doing it so I dont' do it anymore and haven't in a long time. I place my hand either under the jaw and not on the trachea or I place my hand under the chest. I was taught that by another handler and feel more comfortable with that hand placement.

I just watched the video of the maltese and it was not taken off the table with the lead. She placed her hand under the jaw and the other hand either with the tail or under the maltese rear, I just payed attention to her hand placement on the head and she placed her hand correctly to where it wouldn't hurt the trachea. Now the one showing the yorkie took Jack off the table holding the lead and that is something I don't do. The handler showing the maltese taught me alot about handling while I traveled with her for a year. She actually presents a dog very well and is very careful with her dogs. While we don't really travel in the same circles any longer she taught me alot about presenting a yorkie. She use to show for me in the breed and I would show in the group.

I was at the National Dog Show and it was a madhouse. They must have made a fortune on admittances - $12 a pop and so many people coming because it's a benched show and they get to walk around and see all the dogs up close and personal.

My little Nellie was the only one in her puppy class - she's six months and it was her first show. But she was a real trooper.

Jack is really pretty and Vicki was just so nice and gracious. I really enjoyed the show so much.

It looks terrible. Collapsed Trachia, just what I said. This is worst than someone pushing the dog up against their waist to pick them up. People see her doing this on tv and get influenced. She could be hiding the size of his neck by not bringing attention to it.

$12.00 a pop....is really a deal. Try Eukanuba $20.00 for a minimum ticket and when I last attened Westminister it was upward of the $50.00 cost. This year it $40.00 for one day in general seating and $75.00 for two days. A $130.00 for reserved seating.....
