If the lead is placed just right under the jaw and not on the trachea you can do that but it's not always gonna fall just right....I know both handlers personally that showed the maltese and the yorkie and I can't speak for them why they did that. I've done it a couple of times but was uncomfortable doing it so I dont' do it anymore and haven't in a long time. I place my hand either under the jaw and not on the trachea or I place my hand under the chest. I was taught that by another handler and feel more comfortable with that hand placement.
