It does look like it would do some damage but I was taught that the left hand went between the dogs back legs and the right hand grasps the dog by it's jawbone. This doesn't hurt the dog or it's trachea as you are putting no pressure on the trachea at all. Plus doing it this way also strengthens the backbone. I have seen some pick dogs up from the middle as pups only to have the dog look like it was roached back.
