| ![]() I went to my first ever Dog Show today. I sat and watched and really enjoy it. I am going to go back tomorrow. I do have a question. During the showing of Yorkies, One of the handlers the one that won 1st place. While he was walking with the Yorkie. The Yorkie stopped walking so he dragged it. And he got 1st place. Why and don't they get marked for that. Now that happened a couple of times. That just doesn't seem far. There where other Yorkies there that I thought should of gotten 1st, they walked beautiful, stood on the table beatiful. I am so confussed. I don't understand. I hope someone here can exsplain to me

| ![]() The judges are judging each yorkie according to the YTCA standard. If a yorkie has outstanding conformation then the judge will be forgiving of a little misbehavior in the show ring, especially with puppies. As long as the judge was able to see the dog move enough for him to evaluate the dogs movement, then the judge will put up the dog that he feels best conforms to the standard. Of course judges have a wide variation of opinions when it comes to what they perceive the ideal yorkie should look like. |

| ![]() Were there many yorkies there? I am glad you got to attend a show. They can be very educational. Like you learned today, often the dog you think should win does not. When observing from the sidelines you cannot see things the judges sees. |

| ![]() It can be very confusing. Try this~ go a little early to the next one. Perhaps even to another ring or the same ring showing other breeds. Ask some people that are watching the dogs if they can help explain a little to you. If you can see a small group of people sitting together that is usually a good sign of friends out for the show. This or a person alone or a pair of people. Ignore someone very focused of stressed lol. You may or may not be judging the breed you would if you knew what was being shown. At times judges do choose dogs that aren't the best ones. However, they are supposed to follow a standard. But it's not all fair and square. It can be close at times. Dog shows are really enjoyable. But if you don't understand what's being shown then you're missing out on some of the fun. You will get addicted if you learn it. But even following the AKC standard we all have favorite things we like. It can take away from the standard at times. Our standard is so wishy washy. It can be defined many different ways. What color is steel blue to you? |

![]() Which show did you go to? The judges run their hands over the dogs also, so there are some things that are not visible because of the long coat and topknots. I think all the judges give the dog a little "wiggle" room for behavior unless they are in the obedience ring.

You could visit the AKC website and they have some articles on conformation showing that can explain how the competition works. I also agree that the judges give some wriggle room to dogs especially puppies that may misbehave a bit in the ring. I too am learning about the showring and have had fun watching the competitions and trying to figure out which dog is going to win!. Enjoy Gail in Ontario | |
