I liked the suggestion to see if there is a friendly person or two to answer some questions for you.
You could visit the AKC website and they have some articles on conformation showing that can explain how the competition works.
I also agree that the judges give some wriggle room to dogs especially puppies that may misbehave a bit in the ring.

I too am learning about the showring and have had fun watching the competitions and trying to figure out which dog is going to win!.
