I know when you aren't familiar with AKC, things can be like Greek. What she said is that those were her ribbon placings in the class they competed in.

I get confused with the Best of Winners Thing, some confusing things go on there. And then if there so many dogs in the ring and a dog goes over the Breed Dog....there a whole other thing that goes on there.....

Mary, that confused me one time too when I saw a dog win, what I though was 2 points but the owner reported he won a 3 point major so I asked her about it. What happened was that the male got WD for 2 points but he also beat 2 male specials when he won Best of Breed so that brought up the number of male dogs he beat enough to make it 3 points. It can get confusing. Personally I like them having Best of Winners because it does give more of an opportunity for majors; they are hard enough to find as it is.

I understand it, but it took me awhile. Majors aren't difficult to find in Texas. The thing is that it seems to me that females are out in hoards from January to August.....that's where the Majors are......so, if you're showing a dog, you have to depend on the "Cheap" Major (crossing over the points) to put a Major on a dog. Then from August to the end of the year the Majors will pick up on dogs.....

Talk is that AKC is attempting to do away with crossing over the points.....thinking that will draw the enteries....they don't get it that it's the economy and the upping the AKC % that has forced each Kennel Club to up their entry fees.

Dee, why in the world would you think this was about you? People have been following this thread and interested in the shows and I simply posted the link so they could see the dogs that were entered and how things went. Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how UKC derives its points, ie. how a dog progresses to Champion. And, if I am not mistaken, they have something called Grand Champ,etc? Or the link on their website. I was unable to find it. Also. as far as AKC, I thought I understood that if a dog or bitch takes best of winners, they get the crossover points, ie which ever had higher point value(bitch or dog), but is that the case if they take the breed too, or if they take breed are they automatically awarded best of winners? It would seem to make sense that way. And if they are BOB and BOW, are there additional points above what they would accumulate if they were just BOW? I thought there are no points to be gained in Breed competition. Thanks!

With UKC you have to get 100 points and 3 competition wins. If you take your class you get 10 points even if there was no competition, if you get WD you get 25 more points even if there was no competition, if you take BOW you get 10 more points and there had to be competition of the opposite sex to take that. You can easily achieve your championship in 3 shows if you're better than the dog of the opposite sex that you're competing against. They do have Grand Champions. It requires 3 wins over at least 2 other champions.

In AKC if your dog takes BOW you get the cross over because you are considered to have beaten the dogs that the dog of the opposite sex beat. If you take BB you have not only taken BOW but have beaten the Specials in your own sex as well. Therefore points can be gained in the Breed competition if you are a class dog and take Best of Breed over Specials. It can get rather complicated but the steward is happy to help you if you need it.

United Kennel Club: Dog Events UKC® Conformation Point Schedules here is the place on their website that gives you the order of judging and the number of points for every class and etc. At the bottom it says in order to acheive grand Champion, your dog must win at least five champion classes under three different judges. there must be two other champion dogs in the class besides your dog.

Requirements for UKC Grand Champion Title
• Win five Champion classes with competition at five different shows

• Wins must be earned under at least three different UKC licensed Judges


Sorry I don't know much about AKC so can't help you there.

Oops, you're right, 5 wins. I've never tried for a Grand so I didn't remember. I had a gal that had a leg towards her Grand but I put her in a pet home because she was going to be a bit light for my program and the AKC ring.

Oops, you're right, 5 wins. I've never tried for a Grand so I didn't remember. I had a gal that had a leg towards her Grand but I put her in a pet home because she was going to be a bit light for my program and the AKC ring.

You know, I have never been interested in trying for a Grand. There is just not enough competetion around the shows I go to and it would take me forever. Now, if I ever finish Cash, I might try for it but not sure. It just doesn't seem that important for the girls to me.
