I'm not sure if I like showing...please help??? Ok, just for the record I'm not saying I like it- and I'm not saying I dont. I <3 dogs, big and small, cute and (what some people consider ugly). I don't care if it's pure or mutt...but I belive in- fixing all mutts. to have healthier dogs and decrese those in shelters. adopting from a shelter and not buying. not putting clothes on them...expecially booties. (unless ofcoarse it's a chineese crested and it's cold outside (they need a simple sweater)) So basically I'm asking, how do most treat their dogs? Why do the dog's HAVE to have a certain cut? Do you have to crop/dock certain breeds? What is it for- to judge how well groomed/good looking your dog is? If so. I personally love the old time, don't matter if it's a mutt, run around the dirt kinda dog. Why have we humanized our dogs so much? What's the point?

I am fairly new here, but my understanding is people cut the dog's hair according to what they like. Some have the "puppy" cut so that they don't have to keep the hair combed and some have the hair long because they think it is pretty. Some put clothes on the dogs because they like to see their dog's in clothing. We put little shirts on Penny when our house is cold, because she doesn't have fur, but hair like us that won't keep her warm on a cold floor. We have a cute pink coat for going outside in winter also. So you can give a mutt that is a cross of 5 or 6 different breeds a puppy cut that looks a bit like a schnauzer cut just because that is how you like your dog to look! And you can dress your mutt in clothes if you like to do that too, or let them run around "naked." if you prefer that.

| I think it is everyone's personal preference. My Yorkies, like the Crested, get cold. They don't have an undercoat. They also love to be WARM at night when they sleep. I like to make them happy..... and it just so happens that what I choose to solve those issues..... are cute little sweaters and t-shirts. The Yorkie Breed is a great exciting and very agile little dog. But because of their size, I take a little more precaution and "keep them out of danger". A big dog could critically hurt one of this size. Not to mention that it is a sad situation that people target these little dogs and STEAL them. Who wants their beloved family pet taken from them? I don't know if this answered your question, but hopefully it helps you understand........ they aren't human, we know that, but it pleases us to take care of them the way we do. Thanks for asking...... and I would LOVE to see pics of your dogs! I am sure they are adorable! (Kudo's for your concern and promoting spaying and neutering....... I agree with you!)

I think that is awesome you love mutts, there are so many that need wonderful home's , I think its just a matter of personal preference or lifestyle, I wanted a yorkie for my living conditions as well as medical conditions.. To keep your dog in a nice hair cut is also preference but also maintains a clean healthy dog, alot of ' mutts" dont require extra grooming other then mabye a shave for the summer... I dont think its a competition on whos dog is better looking or who has a better hair cut , its really about the breed of dog you have, Yorkies have very long hair , they need to be groomed unless you want it long but it would still need to be trimed and kept up!! My daughter is 13, she gets her hair cut, foiled and trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks if I didnt make her brush her hair or keep it maintained she would look a mess too!! Now if I had a son, he would probally just want a short hair cut and I would have to do that or he would look like a girl

Okay, not sure why you put your post here in showing, since it has almost nothing to do with showing. But that is okay. Your Quote: "So basically I'm asking, how do most treat their dogs? Why do the dog's HAVE to have a certain cut? Do you have to crop/dock certain breeds? What is it for- to judge how well groomed/good looking your dog is? " People do not have to have a certain cut when grooming their dog. It is up to them what cut they choose. From what I know about the history of how they started to crop the yorkies tail was to help protect them from getting their tail bit by rat, since they were originally breed to be rat hunters in coal mines. I have also heard too that they were used in coal mines to protect the miners from loss of oxygen, they would warn the miners. Many countries have band or chose not to crop tails since it is no longer warrented. Not sure when or if AKC will do this in the near future or not. Hair cut or having a certain length of tail is not for the judge to tell how well groomed or good looking your dog is. In the ring yorkies do not show in a puppy cut trim. We trim the length and under their pads so they do not trip. Make sense, so it is to help them. Yorkies do not have an undercoat as most dogs do to keep them warm in the winter or cool in the summer. They have a single strand hair. People care about their dogs (hopefully) reason they treat them as they do. I hope this has helped. Last edited by topknot; 03-29-2009 at 09:02 AM.

I like mixed breeds too- lots of very nice dogs out there that are mixed breeds. However most of them exist because their owners were not responsible enough to spay and neuter their pets (I am not going to comment on people who deliberately mix breeds because I will get all red faced and upset ) So as much as I love many mixed breed dogs as individuals, I can't say that I encourage the concept of mixed breeds. The purpose for showing dogs is to evaluate breeding stock. The idea is to reward those dogs who most closely resemble the ideal dog of that breed as described in the breed standard. The breed standards are adopted by a governing show body (like AKC) but are developed by the parent club of that breed, that club is basically charged with the responsibility of deciding what a breed is supposed to look, and act, like. We want dogs to be as close to meeting their breed standard because it can be of great benefit to have predictability of looks and temperament in a breed. If you buy a purebred dog from a breeder who breeds to meet the standard, you should have a pretty good idea of what the dog will look and act like as your pet. It is nice to have some idea of size, temperament, coat type (esp. if a family member has allergies) before choosing what kind of dog will best suit you and your family. That said, the fact that mixed breeds exist is not going to change, and there are lots and lots and lots of great mixed breed dogs, and purebreds that don't quite resemble the standard, that are available for adoption. If you are flexible and don't mind surprises, these might be the best choice of all. I show my dogs in conformation, agility, obedience and rally. Some of them wear clothes (and they do it because it makes me smile and they enjoy the attention). They are loved members of my family, like children, but the fact that I train them and show them makes our relationship different. We are partners, we are teammates. I do what they expect me to do, and they do what I expect of them (mostly ). It is a very special connection, a different level of companionship. There really is nothing else quite like it.
