Grooming for a show Hi everyone, I am trying to learn as much as I can about showing. I am wondering how you learn to groom for a show? How did you learn? How long did it take you to perfect the top knot? Sorry its a lot of questions. I just wonder how people get the perfect look. How is the line down the middle made? I have tried but I can never seem to get it straight enough. Do you use hair spray to keep it in line once you are done? Are puppies show the same way adults are? I cant imagine trying to do a topnot on a 6 month old Anyone have any tips or advice? Thanks to anyone that can help me along!

Don't have any advice for you but I would love to know too so I'm bumping this up for you. I know you could always go to a few shows and I'm sure most people would be very helpful.

| [QUOTE=Sugar's Mom;1822816]. I saw people at westmister the other day, brushing their dogs on the table right in front of the judge. I brush my dog on the table in front of the judge....nothing wrong with that in an AKC show...I just don't take a lot of time brushing him/her so it won't take up much time. | This is a helpful link to someone learning about caring for the Yorkie coat for show. Shows you topknot and also wrapping. You will see the comb they use for the topknot the rattail, use this also for the part on the coat. http://www.purepaws.net/homegroomngtips07.htm Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |

I used to pretty good at parts and top knots!! It took a long time to get good at this. I was never an expert though. Now that I have MS, my hands and eyes dont work together as good anymore so I need help sometimes. I right eye doesnt "see" detail as good as it did. But I love grooming!! Most exhibitors at the shows are so helpful and are great teachers for grooming!! I also do a quick brush on the table. After all, I want my dog to look as good as possible!!! There are gels to keep the part "in" and it is ok to use for the show ring. (used very sparingly) Good luck!!!

Thanks for the link Deana, I will check it out! I will be attending as many shows as I can, but when they are grooming isnt it bad to go up to someone before they go into the ring? I dont want to be rude is all. Do owners/handlers have certain people groom the dogs for the show? Or do handlers do this themselves as part of handling. Say I hire a professional handler, are they expected to know how to groom them? One of the main things that is intimidating me from the ring is learning how to groom and get it right.

Most handlers groom themselves and also hire help. The help gets the dogs ready for the ring so that the handler can just pick them up and go. But it just depends on the handler and how busy he/she is on that day.
