| Can Anyone Foster? I know this is a place for yorkie rescues but everyday I recieve emails from a rescue here called "Darlington Humane Society", they always are about overcrowding, over worked staff, and a flood a dogs coming in that need homes. The lastest email I received: Foster homes urgently needed, the shelter is making the euthanasia list now. There are just too many dog coming in. The summer is the worst time, so many coming in and so few adoptions. The rescue groups are taking less because their adoption slow down this time of year so it makes the situation worse. We have a number of dogs and puppies spoken for by rescue that will be leaving in the next week or two and if we can get them into foster homes, new dogs and puppies waiting for rescues or adoption can be spared. It is truly a dire situation out there. If you can help by fostering please email or call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx (if you are truly interested in fostering the email is under the shelter site under the "Foster Parent" link and she will happily give her number). Thanks, Kathy ********* DCHS Foster Home Coordinator I emailed back respond that I will post information onto here and another forum I am apart of to increase awareness and hopefully get some feedback. If any of you know of a rescue or foster that can take some of these dogs in please let me or the shelter know! Here is the site: Darlington County Humane Society They will have to stay euthanizing soon and I would hate to see that happen. So many of this shelters dogs can't receive proper health care for dogs with Parvo, Heartworms, Distemper, etc. If you are out of state the shelter has arranged transports before so I'm sure something can be worked out. If there is interest I will happily email her. Seeing as this is yorkie forum I searched through and found a few of the small dogs (even though big dogs need love too, yorkies don't seem to be in this shelter but of course it never hurts to ask, so i'm sure small dogs will do for now) that are in need of fosters/permanent homes: 1. This is Armani & Her Babies, click here 2. This is Jersey, click here Jersey is not small but she is a beautiful girl! 3. This is Elizabeth, click here She is in fact HW positive, but as I said shelter can't afford treatment. There are many more not listed on the site! They take in many everyday and they just need loving fosters/rescues to take them in! If you can help in anyway please don't hesitate to contact them! |

| Okie Doke everyone, I just got an email back and the shelter does have an active transport team that does transport up north and midwest. I'll keep a watch out on any yorkies and their mixes that come in but these dogs really need some fosters/rescues so if anyone can help please let Kathy know! Also, a few of my friends and I are contacting some breed rescues and some smaller organizations up north to get some of these dogs out of there, so even if you can't help it would be awesome if we can get some emails and calls going! |

| I wish I could foster too. I need a house with a big yard...instead of a condo with a porch.

My husband and I are drivers for the transport you mentioned, and we get to see the endless stream of dogs that are among the lucky ones who are being sent to adoptive homes or rescues further north. The transports basically follow I-95 up the coast, through Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philly, and usually end in NJ, PA, CT upstate NY. Please contact me if you live along the I-95 corridor and are interested in driving. The transports are on the weekends, the hand-off points are all about an hour apart, it only takes about 2-2 1/2 hours out of your weekend. It's one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have.

I basically second everything you have said So if anyone has any questions on the transport I'll send them to you. A friend of mine is trying to get some BC rescues in Michigan to take so of the Border Collie Mixes. Do you run through there?

| There is another way you can help the Darlington Shelter. They are competing for a grant from the Pepsi Foundation. They would use the grant to buy a new van so that they could continue to move their animals out of their facility to rescues and shelters up North rather than having to euthanize them because they've run out of space. They are currently using a borrowed van that has 198,000 miles on it. You can vote once a day at this site. Please VOTE, the 180+ animals they have there can't vote for themselves! You'll need to set up an account, but don't worry, I haven't gotten any spam from Pepsi since I set mine up several weeks ago. | Maybe I can help. I'm in the Midwest-Kansas and will be willing to foster. I'm 40 miles west of Kansas City, 25 miles east of Topeka. Right off interstate 70. Just let me know if you can use my help. |

You couldn't have posted at a better time!!!! We can definitely use your help! Are you looking to foster bigger or smaller dogs? Maybe shoot me a PM? Here is another plea for help everyone: ------------------------------------------------------ Subject: Small black Lab Mom with Wee Pups Desperate for Rescue/foster NOW!!!!! Click here for picture of babies! Email #1: Mom is a black lab mix - 35 lbs - with six 3-4 week old puppies. - One blonde, one black and white, 4 black. There were found in a box dumped along a deserted rural road. Mom is very thin, but doing her best to hold the little family together. She is very sweet and hoping for that miracle. There is NO room at the shelter - they are in a crate and will not be allowed to stay for long. PLEASE HELP by contacting Kathy (to foster locally) - mcgowandennis@bellsouth.net by contacting Beth (to rescue) - bethdchsrescue@earthlink.net Thank YOU!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Response: Did anyone agree to foster her yet? If not I'm going to get her picture and stuff posted onto a few dog forums I'm on! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email #2: She is at the shelter with her 6 pup in the office right now. 3 of the pups have maggot infested wounds. They went to the vet and got most of the maggots out but they are down to the muscle so the maggots have to be pick out when they poke their heads out. Not for the squeamish but really necessary if these pups are going to make it. They are about 3 weeks old but are sucking on soft dog food to supplement moms milk. Mom is emaciated. The only offer I had would need to keep them outside and because of the wounds they can't be in an outside kennel. This situation is truly dire and they will be euthanising dogs tomorrow and more during the week. 78 dogs and pups came in just this week alone, and that doesn't include the many cats. The shelter can't handle this massive influx of animals. If you know anyone that can foster/rescue these dogs in South Carolina or if you are willing to call/email and have them arrange transport for rescue or even donate email the two people above and/or visit this website: Darlington County Humane Society
