My husband and I are drivers for the transport you mentioned, and we get to see the endless stream of dogs that are among the lucky ones who are being sent to adoptive homes or rescues further north. The transports basically follow I-95 up the coast, through Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philly, and usually end in NJ, PA, CT upstate NY. Please contact me if you live along the I-95 corridor and are interested in driving. The transports are on the weekends, the hand-off points are all about an hour apart, it only takes about 2-2 1/2 hours out of your weekend. It's one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have.
Oh wow! That is sooo amazing, what a small world!
I basically second everything you have said

So if anyone has any questions on the transport I'll send them to you. A friend of mine is trying to get some BC rescues in Michigan to take so of the Border Collie Mixes. Do you run through there?
