Can Anyone Foster?

I wish I could foster too. I need a house with a big yard...instead of a condo with a porch.

I can attest to the desperate needs of the Darlington Shelter. We stopped by there for a visit when we were on vacation last fall, and we got to meet the dedicated staff and volunteers who literally work miracles every day on their shoestring budget. They deal with the sort of horror stories you see on Animal Planet - embedded collars, puppies covered in fleas and mange, heartworms, parvo, etc. Since there are so few adopters in their local area, they work tirelessly over the phone and internet to match up their animals with rescues and adopters. They have literally saved the of lives of hundreds, probably thousands, of dogs that would otherwise have been euthanized.

My husband and I are drivers for the transport you mentioned, and we get to see the endless stream of dogs that are among the lucky ones who are being sent to adoptive homes or rescues further north. The transports basically follow I-95 up the coast, through Richmond, DC, Baltimore, Philly, and usually end in NJ, PA, CT upstate NY. Please contact me if you live along the I-95 corridor and are interested in driving. The transports are on the weekends, the hand-off points are all about an hour apart, it only takes about 2-2 1/2 hours out of your weekend. It's one of the most rewarding experiences you'll ever have.

I also wish I could help but know that isn't possible.

No, the group that I volunteer with, Paws To The Rescue, just covers the I-95 corridor up the East Coast. There are alot of other transport groups, though, that operate in the Midwest. Do a search in Groups.Yahoo.com on Animal Transports.

There is another way you can help the Darlington Shelter. They are competing for a grant from the Pepsi Foundation. They would use the grant to buy a new van so that they could continue to move their animals out of their facility to rescues and shelters up North rather than having to euthanize them because they've run out of space. They are currently using a borrowed van that has 198,000 miles on it.

You can vote once a day at this site. Please VOTE, the 180+ animals they have there can't vote for themselves! You'll need to set up an account, but don't worry, I haven't gotten any spam from Pepsi since I set mine up several weeks ago.

Mom is a black lab mix - 35 lbs - with six 3-4 week old puppies. -
One blonde, one black and white, 4 black.
There were found in a box dumped along a deserted rural road.
Mom is very thin, but doing her best to hold the little family together. She is very sweet and hoping for that miracle.
There is NO room at the shelter - they are in a crate and will not be allowed to stay for long.

She is at the shelter with her 6 pup in the office right now. 3 of the pups have maggot infested wounds.
They went to the vet and got most of the maggots out but they are down to the muscle so the maggots have to be pick out when they poke their heads out. Not for the squeamish but really necessary if these pups are going to make it. They are about 3 weeks old but are sucking on soft dog food to supplement moms milk. Mom is emaciated.
The only offer I had would need to keep them outside and because of the wounds they can't be in an outside kennel.
This situation is truly dire and they will be euthanising dogs tomorrow and more during the week.
78 dogs and pups came in just this week alone, and that doesn't include the many cats.
The shelter can't handle this massive influx of animals.
