Unfortunately, age should ALWAYS be considered. |

Just because someone is 60 they should only get a senior dog? I just cannot agree with that. And every time I have homed a dog with an older person they always have a back up plan for their dog/dogs to go with someone the dog knows. I am 48, my husband is 50 so are we to old? what is to old? what is to young? I have sold puppies to people in their 60's and in their early 20's and as far as I am concerned they have just as much of a right to the dog they want as anyone else. It's not like I plan to hand over Mindy to the first person to come along, unless they just happen to be a good home for her. There aren't a lot of people out there that want a dog like Mindy, she can really be a pain in the butt and it takes a person with a strong personality and a lot of patience to keep a dog like her. |
I guess we'll agree to disagree on this subject. ;) The only thing I'd like to clarify is that I am not saying an older person doesn't have a right to own a young puppy only that especially in rescue the goal is to find a "forever" home and I (speaking for myself & other in rescue) do our best to ensure a dog's future being with one "final" owner...that's all. You're very right that there are no guarantee's that even the youngest pet owners might not outlive their pets. However, choosing to ignore the greater possibility is not one I am willing to risk when placing a rescue. All the best to you & Mindy!:) |

I am not a rescuer, if there is a need for help and I can or want to do it then I will. I didn't rescue Mindy, we were helping my husbands friend. I was involved with cocker "rescue" for a long time and learned more then I ever wanted to about "rescues".. but I wont get into that. It just really bothers be your attitude about elderly adopting dogs and I have seen this before with another person and it is just wrong! Nobody should have that kind of power over others. Dogs need homes, people need dogs. If they can give the dog everything it needs and they are a healthy active couple, why would it be right to deny them simply on their age!!?? This is what ticks me off with A LOT of "rescues". I adopted a child many years ago and I went through less poking in my life then I did when I wanted to adopt a dog once.. Made me sick.. My friend was turned down because she didn't have kids! Thats INSANE! She cannot have kids and they actually turned them down for that. And then the rescues all wonder why most people just go out and buy a dog. Please. I am having a hard enough time with all this, I am very capable of re-homing Mindy and I really don't need to be told how to do something |
I hope it works out with the couple. I recently took in a 13+ male from a lady who had a stroke. She was 82. She had gotten Nikki from a rescue 2 years ago. So not only is he a rehome he was a rescue prior to that. Nikki has settled in well. I think as long as they have a backup plan to either have family take him or return him it should be ok. |

I will also add I have seen many of these older people still believe shoving a dogs nose into a mess is the way to train because that is what they did a long time ago. |

what did I ever do to make you all of a sudden gang up on me? There was NO way of knowing this placement wasn't going to work out. These are great people who took her. I am not GOD, I cannot foresee the future. I did my best and now I am getting slack for it. And your last line was uncalled for! How perfect are you? I know I am not perfect, but I am not an idiot. I know younger people who rub a dogs nose in its mess too. You think I am so stupid that I would place a dog with mean or cruel people? And once again, I am NOT a rescuer! At least I took her back!!! Even though she starts fights with my other dogs I still took responsibility for her and took her back. And I don't plan on handing her over to the first person who says "gimmie" either. I am extremely disappointed and actually crying over all of this and over these last few posts. You act like I don't care what happens to her. IF it was at all possible i would just keep Mindy, but I have smaller dogs than her and she can be mean. She has started several fights since she came back. Don't blame me for the placement not working out. She was there only 9 days. It did not damage her.. And now older people are being put down just because they are older. And it just really makes me sad. You know there is another human being on the other side of your monitor who has feelings. |

I think you are doing your best and I commend you for it  |
Karla, please believe me I was not attempting to judge you in your rehoming skills of Mindy or any animal. I also commend you for making the effort to find homes for animals who are in need. ;) I'm also sorry to hear that you felt you & your friend were not treated fairly by whichever rescue you encountered, too.:( I simply attempted to offer a suggestion which you clearly do not agree with and so, I thought I was being respectful when I said we'd agree to disagree:confused: Your criteria is just different from mine and I do not penalize anyone for their "age" but, I do have my rescue:aimeeyorkanimal at the forefront of my screening process not the the other way around...that's all. You say tah-mah-toe and I say toe-may-toe...that's all---nothing more to my posts than that. Sorry if you felt I overstepped my place in your thread! :) |
Thank you... Quote:

for understanding the message I was trying to share...;) |

Don't you think this poor thing has been through enough homes??? Seriously. When rescues place a pup it should be in the best interest of the pup, NOT the people. No disrespect, but there is no way I will place a young pup with an elderly couple. I do adopt to elderly, but not young pups. Not denying anyone anything but what is not logical and in the best interest of the pups. |

Our rescue is full right now. Why? Because breeders let anyone who wants a dog have one. Just as long as they have money. Many do NO screening and some do minimal. To say that people NEED dogs is shocking to me. They WANT them...does not mean the NEED them. Too many people's needs are met by breeders and this is why we have a mess that we rescuers must clean up. Now...before you jump up and down, let me say that there are MANY reputable breeders who are NOT the ones I am referring to. A reputable breeder will make people jump through the same hoops a reputable rescue will! I make no excuses for making people jump through hoops to get one of my rescues. The pups do NOT come back. I do it right the first time. I suppose one day one might return, but so far in five years, none have. And, yes, I do follow up on them. :) |

Now...I cannot guarantee that I will outlive them, but the odds are better than if I took in a puppy at the age of say 70 .. add at least 16 to that and what do you get? |
