| I've heard a lot of conflicting information on this so I'm not sure if I can be of help. I've heard (and my vet recommended) that Yorkies should not be fed a food that has more then 30-32% protein as it is too rich for Yorkies and can stress the kidneys. I've also read however, that the high protein kibbles such as Innova Evo and Orijen, which have around 40+% protein are fine and should only be a concern if the dog has pre-existing liver or kidney issues. I decided to play it safe and give her a food with 28%. I use Wellness puppy. I've heard though to that the higher protein foods can give smaller dogs diarreah because they are too rich. Anyone else know for sure though? I'm curious myself. |

| In my opinion, as long as they are healthy, the higher protein the better. |

| Higher protein levels will not cause liver disease. It just brings out the symptoms as far as I know. A higher protein diet should be fine as long as it's not too rich for your Yorkie. I was really liking Orijen for awhile but now think that a lower protein food is probably best. For a healthy Yorkie, I would probably go 30% and under.

YT 500 Club Member | I am very interested in this posting. Three weeks after we got our baby (six years ago), she went into kidney failure. We nearly had to put her down. She had eaten cat food as she was refusing to eat her own food but stealing the cat's. We were made to feel that it was our fault that her kidneys were failing due to the cat food and high protein. However, my husband checked the bags, and the puppy food we were trying to feed her had higher protein than the cat food. Actually, I know it wasn't the cat food now, and, although we are not sure what it was, she is fine today. But it still bothers me when I look at the food we feed her today (Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier) it is high in protein. We have always been told to keep the protein lower. What do I believe?

| Autumn is currently on Innova Reduced fat (because of the pug that I had was overweight.) I have been thinking of changing her to Canidae All life stages. I will have to look into the protein on that. Innova has only 18%. I am actually thinking that is too low! |

| I'm pretty sure that is the million dollar question. Everyone has a different opinion. I feed Teddy Orijen, which is a high protein food now, and I used Innova Evo before that - he has done great on both before these, we used a lower protein puppy food. My vet thinks the protein is fine as long as the dog does not have a pre-existing condition, and Teddy is very healthy. |
