| How much homemade food per dog per pound? i want to start feeding my dogs homemade food. i've found a lot of good information from this board along with what to feed and recipes. I want to know how much food to feed per dogs pound. My yorkie weighs 6 pounds and my golden retriever weighs 120 pounds. I plan on feeding them the same homemade food but i don't know how much to give them since they weigh differently. Any input? Thank you |

| I don't know the exact answer, but according to my book by Dr. Pitcairn, the average daily caloric need for an adult dog weighing 100 lbs is 2,270 calories. The average daily caloric need for a 10 lb dog is 410. I feed Emma about 230-270 calories per day, (depending on our schedule, if we can walk or exercise a lot!), and she weighs about 6.5 lbs. I feed her 1/4 cup kibble in the morning, 1/3 cup homemade mixture at night, plus 1 T. cottage cheese and 1 T. fruit, plus a handful of the small all natural treats/veggies/snacks, and she's skinny! I feel like they can eat a little more on the homecooked diet, since the food is wet, more of it is moisture. I hope that helps give you some idea where to start!

| Homecooked and Raw Feeding Standards Convert your dog's weight into ounces. Multiply that by 1.5%. That is his daily meat requirement for the average dog, not too active. If he is very active, a performance, or working dog, then multiply that by 2%. If dog needs to gain weight, then 2.5%. These are standard guidelines. Every dog is different. You can adjust amounts according to their needs.

| ounces of meat 1.68 ounces of meat, or round up to 1.75 (1 and 3/4 oz.) Then add veges or starches in about a 30% rate (30% of 1.75 is 0.53 or half an ounce). I don't know what type of feeding you do, so please use your best judgement based on what works for you.

| I feed Tetley what he will eat in one 5 minute sitting (I spoon feed him homemade raw - yeah, yeah bad habit I know but at least I know he's not eating spoiled food that's been sitting around!). He lets me know when he's had enough. It works out to be about 1/3 cup twice a day. He's just under 5 lbs. |

| That's a awfully tiny bit of meat. Anyway, dogs are supposed to have more meat than veggies. I give my dogs 1/4 cup of food twice a day. I'm sure that's way more than 1 3/4 oz. I'm sure this conversion is wrong. It has to be. |

| Calculators Yorkiedaze: I feed 1.5%, because my dogs get meat treats during the day, bully sticks, freeze dried, freeze dried liver, (organ meats should represent about 10% of the diet). I said in my post, that it is a guideline and is adjustable based on your own judgement and what you feed. It is not "WRONG", IT IS A TOOL FOR YOU TO USE. Here are some links. I'm sure you can find others. http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.co...htm#calculator http://raw4dogs.com/calculate.htm http://www.bravorawdiet.com/howmuch.html http://www.thek9schoice.com/ I left YorkieTalk due to all the attitude, drama, and insults among it's members. I would like to remind you that we are all here to share information and what has worked for us, NOT TO INSULT OR SPEAK HARSHLY. You could have spoken more nicely about your OPINION other than to say that the guideline was wrong. Please let's be more polite to eachother.

| sometimes it is hard to know how somoene "says' something when they type. i don't think that Donna meant to be rude to you perhaps you read that thinking she was and that changed the tone you read it in. regardless... answering the question Layla gets roughly 1/2 of food a day... her diet is mostly meat... some veggies and a little carbs.... she gets this twice a day sometimes three depending on how much exercise she gets. When i feed it to her, i give her a heaping tsp of her meat (whichever it is that dya... hamburger, veal or chicken) 3/4 tsp of veggies and probably less than 1/2 tsp of rice or pasta.... she sometimes gets cottage cheese in the morning or some yogurt.... there is always kibble on the floor and i just use that as a way for her to tell me that she needs more food.... like Suzy said about how many calories a dog needs.. she is dead on... however i find it VERY hard to calculate every day what she is getting... i let her tell me when she is hungry and feel her ribs ot make sure they are still there if they aren't.. we up the exercise and lower the treats oh and be sure to suppliement! |
