| Brown Ring??? Hi all, I was just giving Kobi a bath for our big trip to Minnesota tomorrow, and I noticed he has a little smaller than dime-sized ring on his head. The edges of it are brown, and it "seems" like there isn't the normal amount of hair growing from it. I tried to do a search and really had no luck. Is it ringworm? Fungus? Anyone with experience?? Thanks! Oh, and I already called my vet but of course they're booked for the night and we leave BRIGHT and early at 4 a.m. tomorrow. Any advice is truly appreciated! Thank you

| it kinda sounds like ringworm...only because you said that the hair is not growing normally. Usually with a fungus, it'll make the hair fall out. Is the skin flaky or look irritated - cause that's also a sign. I got all freaked out when I found a red ring on Mayson's belly. Since there was no hair loss and it went away in a couple of days, the vet told me that it was probably an insect bite an no worries. However, if you think it might be ringworm, I would take ever precaution if you can't get to a vet. Know that it is highly contagious (even people can get it from their pets). So, make sure you wash your hands if you ever come in contact with it. Also, you can get anti-fungul cream from over-the-counter that can hold you over until you go to the vet. Post a picture if you can? |

Oh, and by the way, are you telling me no one should be holding him or touching him while he's home? That sucks because everyone (my whole family) was really looking forward to seeing him I cropped the pic too much so it's probably easier to see in the thumbnail than blown up. Oh, well...here it is...

| Is it where his top knot goes? I know someone once who had this happen after a groomer put the topknot in too tight (got the skin into the knot) and the hair broke off and the new hair grew in dark like that. By the time the hair grew out it blended in with the others and was the same color.

| It's really hard to tell from the picture, but I think it is ringworm. Type in "dog ringworm" in google images. It shows a bunch of pictures. Your picture looks like a few of these. I don't mean to freak you out, but you do need to be careful that this doesn't spread to other areas of your dog or other people. Not only is ringworm highly contagious, it's also really hard to get rid of. Try to get an appointment with the vet today and get some kind of treatment right away. Best wishes on your baby |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I just did some searching - and it looks like it's mostly contagious to children, elderly, and those whose immune systems are compromised. Do you have a "black light" - if so, put the black light over the circular area and see if it causes flouresence (turns green). If it does, it is most likely ringworm. BUT, there are 2 ringworm species that don't flouresce - so it's not a guarentee.
