| Someone advised me to give Katie some yogurt while she is taking these antibiotics. Anyone know how much I should give her and how often?

| Thanks so much for all the replies on this! You have all been very helpful. I am definitely going to check on the ph strips and we have put all the dogs on bottled water. Is there any difference in the distilled water and just drinking water? Would either one work? The vet gave me a paper about the struvite stones, and it said on there they are caused from an infection with the alkaline urine and controlling the infection is more important than creating acidic urine. Well the vet said she needs to be on the cd diet.....and i trust what she tells me....but I didn't even know Katie had an infection to begin with...until she got the stone. Are we supposed to do urine tests periodically to monitor for infection? I could not believe that Katie did not show signs of being in pain with a stone causing the blood that she had. I feel so bad for her and I just hope that she never has to go through this again. I want to do everything I can to prevent it, and I wish I knew more about what caused it. I really think it had a lot to do with the water, do you think I should have my other 2 checked also? They are not showing any signs......but now I worry that I will not notice soon enough. Aahhhh, there are so many issues with these little babies......but their awesome little personalities make it all worthwhile!

| Regular bottled and distilled are not the same...Distilled doesn't have any of the minerals in it, and that's why some vets prefer this type of water for dogs that have stones. The canned c/d will be better than the dry for your baby because it has more moisture and will help dilute the urine

| Thanks a bunch, I will be sure to get the distilled only. What about treats? Katie is a big treat hound.....she loves beggin strips......can I still give her these or are they a no-no? Vet said not to let her sneak the other dogs dry food, she is driving me crazy wanting what they have. I feel so mean but I know it is for her own good. She just acts like she wants something crunchy! LOL You know how sometimes we just crave something? like something salty? That is how she acts. Her favorite things are scrambled eggs, chicken and cottage cheese. Are these ok? That one website that you posted yorkieluv said those were acidifying foods? Is that ok? I bought a watermelon so I am going to try that today, sure hope she likes it! Oh my vet tech also gave me a great idea for collecting urine. A ladle, like for soup or punch? They are pretty cheap and you just wait for them to start going and stick it down there from behind. It works great!!

| Now why didn't I think of that? A soup ladle. Great idea. At least Ralphie won't recognize it for awhile. Just make sure it's a really long handle. I forgot you have a female. It's probably easier to use a ladle than an aluminum pan. I have to catch Ralphie from an angular side profile. And a few times he's stepped right in the pan if I'm not quick to get it out from under him. As far as treats, I was told that as mean as it might sound, I could not alter the Hill's U/D diet. Not sure about the C/D food for your little girl. A few times I added cottage cheese, a bit of chicken, etc..and he started to gain weight and his urine level changed so I had to stop being so nice to him. I make him treats from his ugly canned food. I slice about a half inch roll from the can, and then cut the stuff into quarters or strips and bake it in the oven. I keep it in the fridge and unfortunately, that's the only treats he can have. I know for your girl's diet, Hill's makes Prescription Canine treats. Ralphie cannot use those but you probably can. I'd check with the vet before altering the prescription diet food.

| What does baking do? Does it make it crunchy? I thought it would just kinda melt? lol That is a great idea though, I never would have thought of that but maybe she would just think it was something different. I will check on the Hill's treats but I know I had some of their bones once and Katie would not even touch them, I ended up giving them all to my lab. She wasn't crazy about them either but she eats just about anything!

| Baking makes them sort of chewy, especially when I cut the stuff in strips and bake them. If I overcook them, then they're kind of crunchy in a gross smelly way. The food really is yucky anyways. I put them on a nonstick cookie sheet in a 350 degree oven until I see them start to brown, if you want to call it that. Takes about a half hour, maybe a little longer to really dry out. If you undercook it, it is soft and gooey but when in the end when everything really cools off, they become chewy anyways. I wouldn't eat that on a bet But whatever is in that food is keeping Ralphie's PH levels on target. As soon as I alter the diet, like I said, he puts on a little weight and his PH starts to fall below 6.5 and he could form the oxalate stones. I have read so many varying opinions as far as the proper diet but since I'm not a doctor, I rely mostly on my vet for guidance. He laughs at me when I tell him what I really think of the food. He agrees and says he'd never eat it either.

| I agree totally. I'm not sure how the UD is but the CD does not look or smell very appetizing. Vet gave me a can of SD and WD and said to mix them and see if she likes that any better but I don't think she does. I guess she will eat it if she gets hungry enough but I can't stand those eyes begging me for something good!!

| I was given a few cans of the W/D by the emergency vet for Ralphie's emergency situation a few weeks ago. (Vet thought he had HGE...hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, when in fact the severe rectal bleeding was caused by him swallowing my flaxseed oil vitamin! My carelessness and $286 later!) Anyways, the W/D food is actually a much grosser texture than the U/D stuff. W/D is not a slimy block in the can like U/D...it's very textured and sticky, making the U/D look more appetizing. Blechhh to both though! And when they're hungry, believe me, they'll eat anything!
