| Please use a harness instead of a collar I am opposed to using a retractable leash on a yorkie. Yorkies have no fear. If you were walking your yorkie and another larger dog came along and acted viscious, your yorkie might be inclined to go toward the larger dog, showing no fear. Or if the dog came toward you, it would make it difficult to swoop your baby up into your arms. With a solid leash, and a good harness, you can safely pull your yorkie up to safety in an emergency. Yorkies often have sensitive tracheas. It is important that you use a harness as opposed to a collar on them for this reason as well as others. Collars on toy dogs pose other threats besides the pressure on the trachea. A yorkie wearing a collar, left unattended in your home, can get hung on a bedpost or gate while trying to jump. It would be tragic to come home to find your baby dead from this. Last edited by clynnlaban; 05-14-2007 at 11:59 AM. Reason: additional info |

| Flexis have a purpose. We don't have a fence so Sammy and Loki go outside on Flexis while I stand inside the door or on the porch. When we go for walks we use 4ft leashes and harnesses. Sammy and Loki both wear collars with ID tags and are microchipped. Since they go outside so often, we need to be able to attach their flexis to their collars so they can run out and pee. The flexis we use are the ones with the least tension and they go right out to the lawn and back. They both have multiple harnesses that we use for walks and in the car to strap them into their car seats, however leaving harnesses on them all day generally results in chewed-through harnesses, which is definitely NOT safe. Also, they are crated when they are home alone and we don't have any baby gates or anything like that. I don't disagree with you, I just wanted to point out that all of these things do have a purpose. I also get frustrated when people walk their dogs of any size on retractable leashes, because they could run into the street or run up to any person or dog without the owner's control. Besides, they are quite difficult to juggle. I think it's much easier to use a regular leash to walk a dog of any size.

| hey Thank you so much for your reply. I will definently have to see if I can purchase some flexis. I am not gonna lie, when I let my dogs out to pee, I do not use the harness, i only use them to walk them. |

| I have found that the SMALL dog classic long has very little tension. I also use the flexi with their harnesses when I let them out to the yard if they are already wearing them, I just don't fuss with harnesses when they have to run out and pee for 30 seconds. It's easier to attach it to the collar. You just CAN'T use the brake to reel your dog in like some people do. I *call* them back inside. I also should point out that Loki is 12 pounds and Sammy is 6 pounds. I'm not sure how that impacts my decision. I know those of you with tiny ones leave those harness vests on all day, but we like naked dogs and nylon harnesses

| Uma is one who could not use a retractable leash, particularly on a walk. She loves smaller dogs, but for some reason is very aggressive towards larger breeds. At a rest stop a gentleman with a very large Rott Lab mix came up behind us and she went nuts! Growling and lunging . She does this every time she sees a big dog. My neighbors have 2 Siberien Huskies....I can not even take her on the road in front of their house! She wants to hurt them I think? She pulls so hard on the leash she actually is walking on her hind legs and Growling and barking. I sure hope she out grows this behavior, it is scary.

| Personally I like the retractable leashes. As of yet Roo's too small to use hers and she hates her collar (which we only use to walk- I definitely agree about the hazzards of a collar to such little dogs!) so we may try a harness. Roo may never be big enough to use a retractable but my other puppy LOVES hers! She has more flexibility but I can also reign her in- I make sure to keep my finger on the hold button just in case! And the leash I used on her as a puppy was way too short she was constantly straining even just on a normal walk. So personally I like the retractable leashes for my pup- her leash doesn't drag on the ground and she can go exploring or be held in when needed! It's yet to be seen whether I ever use the retractable on Roo- right now we either let her run off leash or hold her since she refuses to walk (yep she's a stubborn one!) but we'll definitely try her on a harness once she gets a little bigger! =) |

| wow i didnt know that i use a retractable leash and a harness but my retractable has a button and a lock where you can stop him from walking far and then you can lock it into place where he can only travel that far, but its nice and steady and i really like it though, but i can see where you say you can pull him back quicker, i knew about the harness though, at first i didnt and he would always cough and i called the vet and he said try the harness and i did and he has been so much esaier to walk with and he seems to like the harness alot better to
