| Trachea? Reverse Sneeze? Please help. My 5 year old boy has always had what seems to be sinus irritation, as in every so often he'll make this awful honking sound like he is trying to clear something out. He's done this his whole life off and on. The last week he's been doing it pretty frequently with any exertion or excitement. His spirits are good and appetite seems ok. When he's laying quietly he seems to have a tiny wheeze that made me think oh my gosh heartworm! But the wheeze truly sounds nasal and isn't audible when he breathes through his mouth. He has never worn a plain collar when on leash, always a halter so I can't imagine his tiny throat being pulled on or damaged. He is going to the vet in the morning just in case, and the person I spoke to said it sounded like allergies or a reverse sneeze. Well I went and googled the sneeze and it returned with collapsed trachea! Eep. I'm going to be a nervous wreck from now until 9am (they scheduled an early appt "in case we need to keep him" which also is scaring me!). Does anyone know about these things? I feel like making him lay down and not more one inch so he doesn't exacerbate whatever it is. Thank you SO much in advance. Jeni |

| Otis is five years old, and he sometimes does that honking sound, too. I don't think anything of it because it doesn't happen too often. Let me know what your vet says. I'm sure everything wil be fine! |

| Hmm, my two year old Yoda does make some gagging sounds as well, just randomly it seems. I've always wondered what it was, perhaps a furball or something caught in his throat? He loves to play with furry things and I'm sure sometimes some furry hair gets in his mouth.... |

| Trachea problem My friend has a 5 yr. old female Yorkie that has the same problem. She was told it was allergies, lung infection, and heart trouble. She took her to Mich. State Univ. and they ran tests on her and said that she didn't have any of those problems. She had a trachea problem. They did surgery on her today to put rings in her trachea. She will be there until Sat. They said she came through it very good but that she wouldn't have lasted very much longer without something being done. She was put into an incubator to help her breathe until surgery. Will find out more tomorrow when she starts to come around. Hope this helps. Make sure the vet you take the dog to knows about this problem because some don't. Foxy and Fancy's Mom |

| Yikes Yes, I suspect as much but of course am very hopeful. I mentioned that possibility to the vert when I booked the appointment and she said it was a possibility, so it sounds like she's knowledgeable. Let me know how your friend's baby is doing, I'll post tomorrow after the doctor appointment. Wish Pickle (lol his name is Simon but I always call him Pickle) luck! Thank you all for the replies, my nerves would be shot without you! Jeni |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk, Jeni. Hope all turns out well with little Pickle! Our Toto makes a similar sound when she is playing hard and has done this from day one! Scared us silly the first time she did it because we had read about trachael collapse and that's the way it sounds. We rushed her back down to the vet and she examined her and said she showed no signs of a problem with her trachea. She checks it every month when we take her in! Let us know what they find with Pickle!!

| Gypsy Rose has made a similar noise since she was a pup (16 months now) - when she's excited or many other times too and at first we were really concerned and took her to our vet as I suspected collapsed trachae and she was so young but our vet diagnosed tonsilitis (not sure if it ever was and it did not clear up after two courses of antibiotics) - so now I presume it is reverse sneezing. When she goes into one of these "sessions" for wnat of a better word, we hold her nose gently but firmly ( a Bichon Frise owner told us to try this) and it nearly always stops her!! She actually heads towards us now when it happens as she knows it will help! Do let us know what your vet says! |

| Buckeye does this also. It really scared me at first. He acted as tho he couldn't get his breath. eyes bulging out and legs stiffen. mouth tightly closed. I mentioned it to the vet and he said it sounded like reverse sneeze to him. but he didn't say what to do about it. I looked up reverse sneeze on the internet and the one thing that helps him is the blocking of the nose and rubbing his throat to make him swallow. At first I thought it was excitement or "over doing it" that would make him go into these "fits". But he can be just laying there or in the middle of the night go into one of these so called fits.

| Yeah sounds like Gypsy Rose when she has this! Sometimes I gently blow up her nose and that stops it too! |

| Ana, isn't it amazing how quickly they learn? I was sooo proud of Toto yesterday. We were going out and I had to "re-do" her little topknot ... I showed her the brush and she jumped up on the sofa next to me and I simply told her she had to get her hair brushed because we were going out. She amazed me when she stepped over on my lap and rolled over on her back ready to be brushed!!! You just cannot imagine how good that made me feel ... all the effort really pays off!!!

| Spaying I'm once again turning to you nice, compassionate and knowledgeable people for advice and peace of mind. I've just made an appointment to have 6 month old Lexi spayed. I know it's the right thing to do but I'm very nervous about it. I feel horrible putting her through a surgery when she has no say or control over it. I hope you can all put my guilty sole at ease. We're actually going for a complete physical before the surgery. I'm mostly worried about the fact that she's so hyper. I'm worried that she'll jump around and open her surgical site up. Her vet is so kind and caring, he even called a couple of times to check on her after a particularly bad bout of diarreha. But still, I'm worried. I aboslutely love this little dog! |

| Lexi will be ok!! Not to many spay/neuter surgeries go bad. Just make sure she does not 'chew' or 'lick' her stitches after surgery and I would put an Elizabethen collar on her when you are not able to monitor her, preferably her size which would probably be the smallest, xs. You can buy these at the vet, although they are more expensive. I bought mine off ebay and it was $6, where at the vet they wanted $20. Just do a search for "elizabethen collar" on ebay. It seems like so many people here have some of snorting/gagging type issues with their yorkies..........Mei Mei also has this problem!! And my mom's dog, Gucci, also has a problem. She does it more when she is excited or after drinking and it only seems to be one or two little 'gags' and then she stops. I hope it is not a tracheal issue! She is only 6 months old!
