Do you not have an ER clinic near your area? My vet suggested we take our little girl to the ER overnight so that someone would be there to moniter her. Otherwise, if she'd stayed at our vet, no one would have been with her. I'm glad we did have her at the ER because she was in pretty bad shape right after and I can't imagine leaving her somewhere all alone. The ER vet gave her two injections of pain meds overnight and they took her out to go pee and poo (which she didn't do). We picked her up very early the next morning and she just laid her little head on my chest and whimpered all the way home. We gave her sugar water with a syringe since she was too out of it to walk into the kitchen and get her water, and she hadn't had anything to drink all night, not to mention the night before she went into the vet other than what they gave her through the I.V. She shivered a lot and our vet said that was a sign of pain, so we did give her the pain pills.

Anyway, I'd see if your vet will let you take her if you take her to the ER vet overnight. Your vet can call ahead and let them know you are coming and send over the report and instructions ahead of time.

Mac (I had to wait until he was 1 for other health issues, but he is tiny, under 3lbs now) one testicle was not desended so he had to stay over night, the benefit I had was my female, Mellie was 7 months also under 3 lbs was spayed at the same time. They spent the night, in the same cage but my vet is 24 so someone was with them. They came home the next day just fine, maybe a little tired.

I do agree that I wouldn't leave them unattended over night. Maybe there is another vet in you area that is 24hrs.

No ER in my area

The animal hospital (vet) we go has a vet on call, but he doesn't actually go there unless there's an emergency being called in

I REALLY don't like the idea of her being alone.

Gracie was spayed at 9 mos. but was still very tiny (which is why at 6 mos. the vet suggested we wait another 3 mos.--she still hadn't gone into heat yet at 9 mos.). She weighed less than 3 lbs. but she did great. In our area the vets won't do any type of surgery without pre-op bloodwork. I dropped Gracie off at 7 a.m. for her surgery--the vet called me at 10:00 and said she had done great, and I picked her up at 5:00. She was a bit sleepy but the next day I could hardly keep her quiet.

I know this must be so scary having such a wee one. Def. spend the extra money and get pre tests done as someone else has suggested.

that's just ridiculous of the vet. Laser surgery is still surgery. If he's willing to let the ones who get the laser surgery go home same day then he should let the blade surgery ones go home too. he probably doesn't give any extra meds or IV treatment overnight. I'd bring this up with him and ask if you can bring her home that night because you are a nurse and you do know about after surgery care.

I feel your pain. Marcel will only be about 2.5 as an adult - and I am so scared to get him fixed.

I would really talk to the vet and staff about how many tinies they've done, whether they've encountered unique complications from tinies, how comfortable they are leaving her alone overnight.

IF they indeed are comfy w/ tinies and HAVE done plenty of tiny surgeries, they should welcome these questions.

You could always have her spayed somewhere where someone is there overnight. I would. If something did go wrong over night, it could go wrong very quickly for any dog post-surgery, but esp. a tiny.

I have to say that I am in the same boat as you "PuppyLovinNurse" . My Missy turns six months at the end of April and I know that it is said that they should be spayed soon, but I just can't make the call. Missy is 4.7 lbs, and surely she is healthy and large enough to have the surgery, but I can't bear to think of her in any pain as well as I can't help thinking that once it's done it can't be undone. I know exactly how you feel.

I understand the nerves. Riley is 6 mo old and (at last visit) was 2.4 lbs. I am SO afraid of her spay surgery. Right now we are waiting for her teeth, but I know the day will soon come. She's already had her pre-op blood work which came out fine.

Our vet wants patients dropped off the night before with surgery first thing in the morning. Then, as long as everything goes okay, they are allowed to go home at the end of the day.

I'm going to work it out so I can just drop Riley off early the morning of her surgery. There's no way I can take her being alone the night before, especially when she's never been separated from me.

I know so many people have put their tinies through the operation so it helps to hear that things went fine. I'm still a nervous wreck, though!!

Hey... let's all schedule our babies for the same day then we can all go crazy together. Heehee. Can you imagine? Admin would sign on the next evening with 1,458,993 new posts!

Still haven't made the call...she JUST started losing teeth. She lost 2 yesterday & another today, so I'll just wait it out until I know for sure she doesn't need her teeth done too. Jeez...then I'll really be a wreck.

My Nicky was just spayed a few weeks ago on a Friday. She is 7 months old and weighs 3.5 lbs, so she is pretty tiny. Well, things went fabulously. She was already trying to run around and jump off of the bed that evening. I of course had to put her in her kennel to make sure she didn't hurt herself. She took it a little easy over the weekend and by Monday she was about at full force. You little one is going to be just fine! I am curious to know why she must stay overnight?

why do they want the patients dropped off the night before? that's totally unnecessary and probably is only convienent to them. There is no medical reason for that. I wouldn't do it. i agree that you should try to taker her in the morning of, no matter how early they start.

My Vet told me I would have to leave her overnight... I said "no".. no way I would leave her after an operation, overnight in a strange place. If she would have insisted I would have gone to another Vet. Luckily, she agreed to do her first so I could pick her up later that evening, so she went in at 9:00 am and I picked her up at 6:00 pm.
