| Please keep us updated on her condition...My yorkie also has liver problems and bladder stone problems...He was diagnosed at around 9-12 months and is almost 3 yrs old now. Did they do a bile acid test? Please let us know what the ultrasound shows...

| Thank you so much for responding, they did the bile test and she threw up after they gave her the fatty food. The results indicated high values. I have since found out that throwing up can screw up the result. ??? I intend to ask that when I get there in the morning. I will let you know the results of the ultrsound. I have been reseraching medical treatment, diet, laculose and anti biotics so I can speak a bit more intelligently with the vet. It all hit me at once and I am so ignorant of this problem. Keep a positive thought please. She is so special to me. |

| Miko's shunt is inoperable, so it has to be managed through diet and medications...He WAS eating Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 (prescription food which is very important for the liver because it's low in protein), but he just had to have surgery to remove bladder stones which his body is producing lots of because of his liver shunt... So the vet switched him over to Hill's Prescription u/d canned to dissolve the ammonium urate stones/crystals, plus it's safe for his liver because it is also low in protein (none of the protein comes from animal b/c animal protein is too hard for his liver to process b/c of the shunt). Anyway, in my opinion, lactulose is the most important medicine for Miko to take...It pushes the toxins out of the body. See, when protein is ingested, it turns to ammonia which is supposed to be processed in the liver...When there is a shunt, the ammonia is bypassing the liver, therefore ending up in the bloodstream, which can cause seizures, etc. That's why lactulose is so important, it pushes out the toxins more quickly. Also, Miko takes Sam-E, which is the equivalent of Denosyl...It is also important because it is a supplement that helps the liver. Here is a wonderful website for a great support group...Join the group, and look through the files section...You will gain a lot of knowledge by reading through the files...Another thing I am looking to start Miko on is Milk Thistle...It's supposed to be very beneficial to the liver....We'll see. We'll be praying for your baby!! Keep us updated. If she does have a liver shunt, I'm praying that it's extrahepatic so that it can be fixed surgically. Hopefully it's nothing serious!!

| Thank you, you know your stuff, grateful for all the info. I have been reading about it and have a much better understanding, I will be more comfortable dealing with the situation. I will keep you posted. I have been researching the food and did come up with k/d Hills, I have it top on my list of topics for tomorrow. I plan on becoming a part of the group. She is acting herself playing and being her a general snuggle bunny. Its hard to beleive she has such a bad condition. Hopefully we got lucky and it can be corrected or treated, my hope is for quality and length of life. I think she can sense that I am really worried, I need to work on that! I was not able to have children so she is my baby. Again, thanks. How lucky I am to have found this site... |

| Yes, I know exactly what you mean. You would never know that Miko has anything wrong with him at all. He's such a playful, sweet yorkie If you're going to feed Hill's, I would feed the canned because their dry foods contain something called ethoxyquin which is considered a carcinogen and is banned from human foods because of this. The canned food is good for them though, from what I have heard, that's why I feed the canned u/d and Miko actually likes it! But the u/d is for stones, so your baby will prob be put on the k/d. Another food to consider is the Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 dry food. It doesn't have the ethoxyquin in it, and I guess it's tasty because Miko was a very picky eater before he started eating it, and he loved it. I guess it's because that's what his body needed Good luck!

I appreciate you taking time to fill me in. I hope Miko keeps doing well and wish us luck for q quick diagnosis and care plan... Thanks |

| Update she has a extrahepatic shunt. She has been put on a special diet, Lactulos, Metronidazole and potassium bromide for the next two weeks, a consult is set for the 26th and surgery on the 27th. She is still not showing any sings of illness, is just being sassy.... Her liver size is decreased and has a very small stone in her bladder. The doctors say we are lucky to have discovered this since she has no signs of illness. Thank goodness for pre dental procedure blood work. We are anxious but feel that the surgery is the best course of action. Please keep us in you thoughts and say a little prayer for sassy. I hope Miko is still doing well. Thanks for your support. |

| Thanks for your update pegsley...I was really worried about your little one. I'm sorry that she did end up having a shunt, but I'm glad they were able to find it, and that they will be able to operate. We will be praying for your little one and that she has a successful surgery and a quick recovery.

| I am going through the same thing I took my 16 month yorkie male in to be neutered and the liver encymes test came back high. So, they did not do the neuter and they did a liver function test. It came back high too, so we were told that Mickey had Liver Shunt. I question the vets (the one I see had a day off) ability to say that without more tests being done and the scan. I have done some reading and belong to the Yorkie Meetup in San Diego and that group is filled with fabulous friends that are supportive with information about what they went through. I am worried sick because he is my baby, but I am trying to be strong because I don't want him to sense that I am stressed out. I think he already does. They are so smart. I love him unconditionally, no matter what his condition and I will do WHATEVER it takes to care for him. Please keep Mickey in your prayers. He shows no symptoms and is happy and playful. Our consultation with the internal medicine specialist is on Tuesday, March 20th.

| I have an 8 yr old Yorkie that has a liver shunt (5 yrs now). Get to a vet that knows about these or is willing to find info for treating. We traveled 150 mi. to get to the right vet. Cricket eats Hill's Prescription Diet l/d (liver diet). The vet (a young woman BTW) gave me a list of veggies I can cook for him and he LOVES scrambled eggs- which are great for his coat. He also takes 1 tablet a day of Denosyl (prescription from vet). He had been doing great but just last wk had surgery for a lg bladder stone. Just be sure your little one does NOT eat meat of any kind or meat products. If I can be of help to you, let me know. We'll keep your little one in our prayers. |

| Surgery? They immediately put my Mickey on Hill's l/d, but for now I have to see a specialist. Did your Yorkie ever have the surgery? I have a friend that manages her Yorkie's Liver Shunt by diet and meds tool. Thank you for taking the time to share. Dee

| Deezy, Mickey will be in my prayers...The vet did exploratory surgery on Miko and it was not repairable. So he is on denosyl, lactulose, and a low protein diet. It's a good thing your vet went ahead and put you on the l/d...Is it canned or dry? Do not give your baby any meat at least until you can get more info because protein from animals is very hard for their livers to process. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask.
