Love Dog Food Rating

Seems like we have had a lot of questons on dog food lately so thought this might be of interest to some of you

Quote:
How to grade your dog's food: Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (I.e. "ground brown rice", "brewers rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the
first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein
source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are
pesticide-free, add 1 point

Hope this helps!

This is cool, thanks! I'm in the process of switching Yuki's food and I'm not quite sure what brand I'm going to switch to as of yet. This certainly helps!

I just did Diamond Naturals Small Breed Adult Chicken & Rice and it got 104, yay! I was worried because I saw that one of the Diamond foods only scored in the 60's. Now I can officially recommend it ..."Princess" is super picky when it comes to dog food & treats, and she loves this!

Thanks for this thread. Very informative.

I was reading the specs on Blue Buffalo and when we went to do our Sunday Costco run, I noticed the Kirklands chicken and rice for small dogs. So I pulled up the Blue Buffalo chicken and rice for small dogs on my phone and compared ingredients. I was amazed they were pretty "dog" gone close. The first two ingredients were spot on. Then there were a couple of ingredients that exchanged places, but were still equal as far as part of the mix. Then it kept on going right on down the line.

So I took a shot at a bag and Buddy went crazy over it. I did an equal mix of his old brand that came with him from the rescue folks and the new bag. He is going to be eating the mix for a week before he switches over. I've been reading reviews on this product and as I mentioned earlier, I take things with a grain of salt. It's up to Buddy to display reasons to love it or not. So far, he's active, happy and he's going to the bathroom very healthy. We shall see!

Wow! I have been feeding Diamond Adult Maintenance as it is what Beamer's breeder recommended. We just bought a 50lb bag a couple of weeks ago too. (50 lbs is the only size the local feed store carries)

Maybe when we run out of it we will switch to one of the higher rated foods.

But Beamer and Lil Bit are doing well on it.

I have used this rating system in the past and prefer it to the starred rating system usually advocated. The problem with the site that rates by stars is that they are not taking into account different breeds and diet concerns. For example, only foods with very high protein levels are rated as 6 stars- while I never recommend feeding such a high protein food to a yorkie without first have a bile acid test run and even then I don't really like it. This rating system allows for lower protein foods to be graded well.

While I do agree, it's kind of lame how on dogfoodadvisor rates all the 6 star foods as these super high protein foods, I am not really big on this rating systems either. Nutro, for example, grades a high B... Nutro is terrible, imo, and they have had a TON of quality control issues and recalls!! So it's misleading to someone thinking "Oh, I am feeding a great food!!" I think where a food is manufactured, how it is made, where the ingredients are sourced from, etc, should come into play while rating any food.

So Iams Smart Puppy scores fairly well then? Got a little cross-eyed reading the ingredients list. I guessed 88 because there were no abbreviations (BHTs, etc) in the list and I don't know what I'm looking at.

I got 85/C which makes it an average food- which to me means, not great or even really good quality but not the worst thing on the market- which is pretty much how I would classify the food even without a ratings system.
