Max just got neutered HELP - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Ok I was considering mating Max with a neighbor's grand-daughter's Yorkie. We both wanted at least one more yorkie and had friends who did too. We knew it would be expensive and may not even work. After hearing all of your responses, I opted to get Max Neutered instead. I was told after he tries mating for the first time, he may start marking and acting up.

this is EXACTLY what is happening NOW after I got him fixed!!!!!!1

since I picked him up on Friday, he has actually lifted his leg on ME!!!! twice. If that's not enough, last night he jumped up on the bed and pee'd. My once well trained, housebroken, mild mannered Max has turned into a mad man. He barks at everything now. I took him outside to walk and he barked at the flags. We do this walk nearly every day. Last night when hubby came him, he barked when he pulled in the driveway. He is 14 months and has never exhibited behavior like this.

SOMEONE HELP ME

WOW..I don't know what I would do in a case like that

I wish I was able to help you, but I'm sure someone here has some advice on what to do.

Ohhhhhhhhh nooooooooooooo, my vet just called me and I am to pick up my Ty at 5pm, he just got it done today.........any other things you can tell me about things you have done for Max or any other behaviors.....thanks

It has been known for males to act up right after they are neutered. Some that have never marked or humped will start doing it right after they are neutered. I believe it is caused by the hormones that are out of line but it usually only last a few weeks and then the dog goes back to his normal self.
This may be what is happening to your boy, only time will tell. Hang in there in the mean time and make it clear to him that his behavior is not acceptable.

Vet said walking on leash for 7-10 days. The stitches were inside so he wont pull at them and he doesn't need a follow-up visit.

Vet said --- stay calm yeahrightsure 14month old male yorkie calm

Other than the problems i sited above, he's basically the same and he didn't start this behavior until Monday. so not sure what's going on here. Vet's office is closed today so I have to wait until tomorrow to ask what I should do. I know there's nothing medically wrong with him but why the drastic behavior change?

I Agree, my Vet told me the same thing.

My vet never told me about behavior changes immediately after being neutered. I will call them tomorrow to follow up.

A few weeks I can deal with this behavior. But I miss my well behaved, housebroken, mild-mannered lil guy

I hate being upset with him. I love having him on the bed with me but I fear I just cannot have him there now. Guess i'll let a few weeks go by and pray he stops this temporary behavior. Thanks for your input

A lot of vets don't tell you everything that you need to know about neutering. My vet didn't and I found out through reading many many articles and dig deep from the Internet. Neutering is like a gamble and very much depend on individual dogs. Some will become calmer, some will become more aggressive. It was also mentioned in an article that a dog which is timid if neutered might turn in to a agressive dog stem from too much fear, again this is depending on individual dogs. I hope things will be normal with Max soon. This is why I am a little apprehensive about neutering.

I totally agree. My Vet didn't tell me about behavioral changes also. After Piper got fixed, she started humping Misha. She never did this before. I found out after having more or less a hysterectomy, her testosterone levels went up causing her behavior. I think because 1st they are a dog, the vet doesn't inform all. If it were you or me, the doctors would inform us about all side effects. Keeps them from being sued. I really don't think most vets understand they are our babies. I've changed vets 3 times so far, because I didn't like the way they treated my babies. I have a vet now that calls me every so often to see how the girls are doing. Maybe it had to do with telling her about how my girls are the world to me & that she was my 3rd change of vets. If I didn't like how she treated, I'd find another.

I think this may be what's happening. Max was very submissive before the neutering. He never really barked at much. Well hopefully with a few more days or a week or so, he'll get back to himself.

I know it was still the right decision but I guess I'm just upset because "i didn't know"---know what i mean?

Yeah, I understand. I feel the same. Decisions like neutering should be made only when the owner knows what might happen after and the information shouldn't be withheld and I think it is the vet's responsibility to at least talk to the owner. I changed vets because of that. They didn't even tell me after I asked and I feel that they try to tell me as little as possible and their services wasn't a good price either, it was a little on the high side. I just got irritated because I feel like they think I am stupid and not knowing anything and just keep charging absurd prices. On my last visit, they knew I wasn't very pleased and I have told them many times my puppy is my baby. I just had enough of that vet!

I might have to rethink this one.... does this always happen or does it depend on the dog? and is it temporary or what? now I'm scared

It doesn't always happen. Some dogs become calmer after neutering, some stays the same but there were cases they turn otherwise. Whether it is temporary or not, I think it really depends on the individual dog. Get a vet that you trust, one that will tell you details when you ask and do some reading and research before you ask them. It will help you to gain more perspective. I really do not want to scare anyone because this is very much a decision that each responsible dog owner would have to make. I just think that it should be made with a full awareness of what the consequences might be. If you are not in a hurry to make the decision, read more and ask more questions because it cannot be undone.

My dog was neutered 3 weeks ago and he's 5 yrs old, but he also had bladder surgery for stones. He has exhibited nothing different than before. He was always calm and is exactly the same way...no accidents, but still barks at the mail lady, the UPS guy and the Fedex guy, no more, no less
