A lot of vets don't tell you everything that you need to know about neutering. My vet didn't and I found out through reading many many articles and dig deep from the Internet. Neutering is like a gamble and very much depend on individual dogs. Some will become calmer, some will become more aggressive. It was also mentioned in an article that a dog which is timid if neutered might turn in to a agressive dog stem from too much fear, again this is depending on individual dogs. I hope things will be normal with Max soon. This is why I am a little apprehensive about neutering.
