| Emptying the anal glands? Kind of a gross question, but, I've heard controversial views on this and wanted to know what peoples opinion was on here. I've heard some people say you can do this yourself and it needs to be done regularly like once every two weeks. I've heard other people say it needs to be done by your vet and it only needs to be done once a year so what is you guys feelings on this? If you can do it yourself and it suppose to be done regulary, how exactly do you do it? Thanks for the help! |

| I'm interested in info on this too. Winnie rubs her put on our nice oriental rug! Although she looks cute doing it, it leaves the rug smelling less than cute... |

| I have the groomer do it once a month. I'd like to learn how to do it myself just in case of an emergency.

| I've had yorkies for over 13 years and have never done it nor had it done. It is something that should occure naturally. If you find there is a problem then I would take them to a vet or a groomer that is experienced. I would never do it myself. But Like I said it has never been neccessary for any dog that I have ever owned. |

| The reason I asked was he started rubbing his but on my rug this morning and I thought I read somewhere that, that meant the anal glands needed to be emptied? If this is a natural process how exactly does it happen? |

| Anal Glands... I do not empty my dogs glands on a regular basis as I believe that nature has its way of doing things and it is best to let things happen as they should. The glands should empty naturally as they poop. But if they do not work as nature planned and they are scooting their butts on your carpet then you need to help them out. The anal glands are two sacks on the inside of the body just under the anus. On a large dog they may feel like grapes but on our small dogs they are smaller. It is very easy to empty them , just lift the tail and press under and behind the two small bumps you will feel. Put your thumb and index fingers together in a v shape just under the anus and behind the glands and press in and up behind the glands. It is like squeezing a pimple, you need to get under the filled area. Very important.... Do not watch what you are doing as the fluid will be expressed into your face, very very gross. And make sure that the dogs butt is aimed in a safe direction so it will not squirt to far. Maybe aim at the side of the bath tub.... I hope I have made this clear to you and if you have any more questions just ask. I always check my dogs glands when they get baths, if I do not feel large filled glands I do not bother with them. As dogs get older a lot of them seem to have trouble with their glands not emptying and we need to make sure we help them out. Your groomer should be able to help you with this if needed, vets don't really like doing this in their office as it stinks things up..... | It happens when the have a bowel movement. the firm stool expresses them. They might rub thier butt on a carpet to help it also, if it makes them itch. You have to figure in the wild there was no one to do this for them. Some butt draggin is normal, if it is excessive, it could be a sign of worms also. |

| Thank you Debbie for the information! I apprecaiet it so much! He hasn't been scarthing his butt on the rug execessively, I think he's done it a total of two times since I had him. I just remembered reading that was one of the signs that perhaps tha glands needed to be emptied and I wanted to figure out how to do it Thanks again!! |

| When I first got LillyBelle and took her the vet, she did express her anal glands and told me that it shouldnt be done very often, because if its done too often it could cause harm later and possibly need surgery. That the dogs will adjust. So Ive only had it done that one time. I dont know if the groomer does it...but I only take her every 2-3mos. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if its not broke, don't fix it. your dog will express his anal glands on his own. you do not have to worry about it. unless you notice excessive scooting and licking of the butt. then i would take him to the vet so he can check it out. ask him to show you how to do it. i find that squeezing on the outside of the anus doesn't work if they are compacted or if there is a lot in there. To be thorough you need to be gross and, with a gloved hand and lub, put your index finger in the anus and feel for the bumps on the inside. once you find it you pinch it between your index finger on the inside and your thumb on the outside. its gross and it smells and your dog isn't happy about it, which is why i say if there isn't a problem don't worry about it. it doesn't have to be done monthly or yearly if there is no problem. leave his butt alone. lol oh and by the way, so i don't look like some dog butt freak, i used to be a vet tech and had to do this all the time. i hated it so why put stress on your dog and yourself, and why gross out the tech if its not needed?
