if its not broke, don't fix it.
your dog will express his anal glands on his own. you do not have to worry about it. unless you notice excessive scooting and licking of the butt. then i would take him to the vet so he can check it out. ask him to show you how to do it. i find that squeezing on the outside of the anus doesn't work if they are compacted or if there is a lot in there. To be thorough you need to be gross and, with a gloved hand and lub, put your index finger in the anus and feel for the bumps on the inside. once you find it you pinch it between your index finger on the inside and your thumb on the outside. its gross and it smells and your dog isn't happy about it, which is why i say if there isn't a problem don't worry about it. it doesn't have to be done monthly or yearly if there is no problem. leave his butt alone. lol
oh and by the way, so i don't look like some dog butt freak, i used to be a vet tech and had to do this all the time. i hated it so why put stress on your dog and yourself, and why gross out the tech if its not needed?
