Anal Glands...

I do not empty my dogs glands on a regular basis as I believe that nature has its way of doing things and it is best to let things happen as they should.
The glands should empty naturally as they poop. But if they do not work as nature planned and they are scooting their butts on your carpet then you need to help them out.

The anal glands are two sacks on the inside of the body just under the anus. On a large dog they may feel like grapes but on our small dogs they are smaller. It is very easy to empty them , just lift the tail and press under and behind the two small bumps you will feel. Put your thumb and index fingers together in a v shape just under the anus and behind the glands and press in and up behind the glands. It is like squeezing a pimple, you need to get under the filled area.

Very important.... Do not watch what you are doing as the fluid will be
expressed into your face, very very gross. And make sure that the dogs butt is aimed in a safe direction so it will not squirt to far. Maybe aim at the side of the bath tub....

I hope I have made this clear to you and if you have any more questions just ask.

I always check my dogs glands when they get baths, if I do not feel large filled glands I do not bother with them. As dogs get older a lot of them seem to have trouble with their glands not emptying and we need to make sure we help them out. Your groomer should be able to help you with this if needed, vets don't really like doing this in their office as it stinks things up.....
