| MY yorkie's penis is 'stuck' in the 'lipstick' position I have 2 male yorkies. the older one has been humpiing the younger and each have been 'licking' each other 'down there.' i know it sounds gross, but my older dog(3 years old) yelped earlier today and was walking funny and then i noticed tonight about 4 hours later that his penis is 'stuck' in the 'lipstick' or 'red pepper' position (forgive me for ignorance on lack of a better term) It is dried out by now and not looking wet or raw and it looks all dry. Should I take him to the vet?? Have any of you heard of this before??

| Yes, if it's out for 4 HOURS (poor guy), that's not normal, and you should go to emergency care, as they can help him retract his penis... |

| This happened to my Malt one time and his was out for about an hour.. I gave him a warm bath and um.. kinda massaged the area with a warm washcloth and it went back in almost right away. Sometimes it will just get too dry and not be able to retreat so moisture will usually help. If you try the warm bath and it still doesn't go back in then you might want to get the help of a vet.

| Thanks for all the advice!!! I must admit....I didn't really know how to word it!! I'm sorry if I offeded anyone for lack of better terminology!!! I posted also on a site called "Just Answer" www.justanswer...com and they have 24 hour vet specialist on there to answer your questions within a few hours for only a dollar!!! She said this was a serious problem and that if it wasn't back in by morning...I need to take him to the vet. Even though I am very concerned about my dog, I admit I am laughing hysterically at all the posts!!! I will update you guys and let you know... I'm gonna try the bath trick and then, if that doesn't work, the vet!! Thanks everybody!!!

| p.s. thought I would let you see what vet specialist said... Thought I would cut and copy in here what the vet specialist said in case, God forbid, anyone has this issue as well..... "This can be a very serious problem if it is left untreated. This usually happens because the bulbous glands of the penis have managed to engorge outside of the prepuce (outer skin), which makes it difficult, or impossible, for the penis to retract. This can lead to problems if the situation isn't corrected. Often, the vet will have to anesthetize the dog, lubricate the penis and sheath well and then use traction sutures to move the prepuce back up and over the penis. Sometimes it is even necessary to surgically widen the preputial opening. They try to avoid doing this, if at all possible, though. If the opening is too wide, the tip of the penis may stay extended and this appears to be pretty irritating to it." Hope this helps anyone else, too... If it has not retracted by the morning, you need to see the vet. Let me know if you still have questions.

| I had posted a similair problem on General Talk last week. I am glad you did also as now I know what to do. I refer to the problem as not being able to get his pistol back in the holster. Ain't it great, these little stud muffins around the house. I have to wash his little toy "friend" quite often.
