| New puppy 3 mo old wont eat I am new to this forum and also new to owning a yorkie. I am having a feeding problem with my new puppy who is now 3 mos old. i apologize in advance for the long post. Here is whats going on and i hope that someone can shed some light on the situation. I brought the puppy home a week ago wednesday. I took her to the vet the very next day as needed for warranty. Vet said she was ok but showed some symptoms of kennel cough so she was put on antibiotics. She was on the meds for a few days. i then gave her the revolution flea and heartworm stuff. When i brought her home i was given a bag of canine 33 dry food. I went to feed her and she didnt eat it dry. The next feed i gave it again but this time moistened she still didnt eat it. she went for a feedings without eating much of this food so i switched to nutro max for puppies dry food. She still wouldnt eat it so i called the vet. I took her in on a monday afternoon as she had not eaten but a few bits here and there the whole day so i was worried. the vet then gave her some wet vet food and brought her back to me with the bowl completely cleaned out. the vet then gave me a tube of nutra-cal and said to give it to her when she wont eat or 3 times a day. she did fine for the rest of day since i mixed the wet and dry together. come the next morning she wouldnt eat again no wet/dry mix at all. so i give her the nutracal and her antibotic. she went from the am hours to about 3pm without eating. 3pm rolls around and she eats a 1/4 of a 1/4 cup of dry mixed with about 2 T of wet food. 10pm rolls around and she gobbles up the whole 1/4 cup dry and 2 T wet mixture. next day in the am she doesnt eat again. so i go and buy her the nutro natural formula since i read on the web that some yorkies love it. i bought both wet and dry formulas. she loved it the first couple of feeds and then went back to the no eating business. i have been keeping a log for the past 5 days on her eating, pooping, etc and here is what i come up with so far. 8am - gets up to go pee etc from crate, then try to feed her she eats a 1/4 of whatever i put out which was originally 1/4 of dry nutro natural and 2 T of wet nutro natural. have now gone down to 1/8 c of dry and 1T of wet. out of this she will eat 1/4 of it or hardly any at all. 10am- i try again to feed with fresh food. again only eats a tiny bit 3pm or so - she eats all of her food 7pm - try to feed and she eats only a bite or two 10pm - same as 7pm 12am - she eats all her food. She will not eat dry food at all i have found. tonight i fed her about 3T of wet food and she goobled it all up. this was at 12am and she had not eaten since the morning which was only a bite or two at the most. i have given her nutra-cal 3 times today. i really dont want to go giving nutra-cal every single day now and i surely dont want to be mixing and heating etc etc. is the little that she is eating enough or do we have a problem? i would also like to get her into the habit of eating dry food. i am out and about quite frequently and also have a toddler here at home too. dry food is just plain simple to lug around while out and to feed etc and i heard its better for them as well. it seems to me that she is just being really picky and i would like to get her out of the habit asap. should i just feed her the wet food from now on or what? do i just not offer food and give only nutra-cal and hopefully she will hungry enough to eat more than one real meal daily? im really getting frustrated as i have tried so much in the past few days and nothing is working out. i find it so hard to believe that she ate at the place we bought her from. again i apologize for the extremely long post i wanted to make sure i explained everything. i would also like to thank everyone in advance who responds. Is. |

| I think you need to relax a little and not worry so much about your puppy eating. I suspect you're feeding her too often. Looks to me like she's eating when she's hungry and not eating when she's not hungry. I think a 3-month old puppy can be on two meals a day - with water always available. From the way your puppy is eating now, I think she would easily eat well twice a day. I don't think any dog will eat well if they are constantly watched, constantly have different foods put in front of them, constantly have food available, and are constantly being tried to get to eat. With all of this done - how can a puppy ever get hungry? ****** Put away your paper and pencil away - relax - get some good dog food that you dog has eaten in the past - play with your dog - let it get a lot of exercise and work up a healthy appetite - offer it food twice a day - and I'll bet she'll eat just fine. ------- and if she isn't real hungry once in a while, don't worry about it - she'll catch up at the next meal. *** Also sometimes - I think constantly changing foods and catering to your dog's likes and dislikes can turn your dog into a very picky eater. (I have two picky eaters - and believe me - it is no fun!!!) Good luck - Carol Jean |

| Yorkies are known for not being big eaters. I leave dry food down for my two to eat whenever they want and they only eat twice a day for a few minutes. I wouldn't worry unless she stops eating altogther. And when you say you gave her the revolution, you did put it on her skin and didn't feed it to her right?

| First of all, Welcome to YT!!!!! I agree with Snowa. It sounds like your little girl is eating just fine. These guys really don't eat very much especially at only 3 months old. Mine one is 9 months old and still does not eat very much but he is healthy and at a very healthy weight, so he is getting enough food. Try to stick with one puppy food. Changing food frequently will cause them to be picky eaters and may upset their stomach. You can also try hand feeding her the kibble, alot of them will eat it alot better if you hand feed them. But then they will probably expect it all the time. Congrats and Good Luck with your little girl!!!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome!!! First let me commend you for really spending the time to make sure your new baby is eating. Cali was a picky eater and still can be at 15 months, but I would try as suggested above, to feeding her 2 times a day and giving her some Nutrical as well. If she isn't really tiny she should do fine on 2 meals. I have tried so many dog foods for Cali and she will only eat Cesars whch isn't a good quality wet food and chicken! She should settle in soon. Good luck and ask any other questions that come up that's what we are all about.

| When I got Coco she didn't eat that much either, but was only 7 weeks. I even thought that the breeder lied to me about her eating on her own. But that same night while I was sleeping I heard her get up and go to her bowl and she ate (a lot) on her own. Did you make sure that you mixed whatever the breeder was feeding her with what you want to feed her? Even though Pedigree isn't the greatest dog food I had to mix it with Cocos Nutro Natural Choice because that was what she was used to. Then little by little I put less Pedigree in the food, and now she's eating the Natural Choice without the Pedigree but I still have to feed her by hand some times and give her NutriCal everyday. |

| WELCOME!!! I THINK EVERYONE HAS GIVEN GREAT ADVICE. I DON'T THINK THAT YOU NEED TO WORRY TOO MUCH ON HOW SHE IS EATING. I THOUGHT I HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH LOUIE WHEN I BROUGHT HIM HOME. I FOUND OUT THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE ALL HIS BABY TEETH AND I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THE DRY FOOD WAS JUST ALOT OF WORK FOR HIM. SO I MIXED IN A LITTLE WARM WATER AND MASHED IT A LITTLE SO IT WOULD BE EASIER FOR HIM TO CHEW AND THAT DID THE TRICK. I KNOW THAT IT IS A BIT OF A PAIN TO MASH EVERYTHING BUT HE WAS EATING AND I WAS HAPPY... THAT WAS ALL THAT HE NEEDED. NOW THE BOY EATS LIKE A TROOOPER WITH OR WITHOUT WATER OR MASHING.. GIVE IT A TRY MAYBE IT WILL WORK FOR YOU... POST SOME PICS WE ALWAYS LIKE TO MEET THE NEW BABIES AND OLDER KIDS TOO ANNETTE AND LOUIE |

| well thank you all for your replies and warm welcomes...i feel a lot better now that I know she is not abnormal or something. Well I did put away the pen and paper. I will try to just let her do her thing on her own as far as the food goes. As far as the revolution... yes i did apply it to the back of the neck area per the instructions that came with it. I think i will also weigh her to see if she gained any weight since her last visit to the vet. thanks again everyone and see you all around on these boards. I included some pics of my new baby! Her name is Sox (cause she loves socks) and my boys love the White Sox. She is 3 months old and last week weighed in at 3lbs 1oz Is. |

| my Hope is 6 months old and just recently quit eating much at all. She wouldnt eat the hard kibble at all, would only lick canned food off of it... she went to the vet today for a check up and he found that she had a baby tooth that was VERY loose.. he pulled it and she ate much better this afternoon... but his suggestion was the same as thos here, that she will eat if she is hungry. I was a little paranoid too since Hope is so small but after reading here, you know, I feel much better... d

| It sounds like Sox is eating just fine to me, and her weight is good. I have a 13-week-old male, and there are times when he doesn't eat that much. Other times, he gobbles his food down. I've noticed that on the days where he seems more active, he has a bigger appetite. There are days when he seems to want to sleep alot (especially rainy days), and he doesn't eat much those days. I think as long as they're eating, drinking and active, there's nothing to worry about. If you think she should eat more, try playing with her and keeping her active and see if it improves her appetite. Congratulations on your new baby! She's a cutie! |

| A 3lb. 3 month old puppy should be eating approx. 1/2 to 3/4 cup a day. Any less than 1/2 cup and I would continue to supplement with the Nutrical. Monitor her stools - most problems show up there quickly. Just changing her food can cause an upset stomach and make her eat less so stick with one kind. I think a 3 month old should still be fed meals 3x a day and dry food and water left out. |

| What I do is put the dry food in a food processor and turn it into a powder and then mix with the canned and hot water to make a soupy gruel. At least this way she is getting use to the taste of the dry, if not the texture. |
