| Nervous About Rabies Vaccine :( Stewie's going in tomorrow morning and I am freaking out about it. Guess I just wanted to share... Any experiences you can share? Good or bad appreciated. Thanks!

| No experience yet I'm in the same boat. Chachi gets his next week. He also gets the lepto shot that the vet says he has to have. He said lepto can be passed from dog to human likes rabies can.

| My puppy is four months old and I took him to the vet today for shots. I told the vet that I was nervous about him getting a rabies shot before the age of 6 months because I didn't want it to overload his immune system. He told me that most of all, it's against the law for a canine to not have the rabies vaccination between 3-4 months old. IF he were to bite someone, he would have to be put down, his head cut off and sent off for rabies testing! THAT did it for me...he got the vaccine today and he hasn't even acted like it was sore! Don't worry, go for it! |

| Chachi: Please research the lepto vaccine and get a second opinion before you allow your vet to give it to your puppy. It has been evaluated that the risk of a reaction to the vaccine is greater than the risk of getting lepto in most areas of the country. It is the one with the worst reputation for adverse reactions in yorkies and I wouldn't give it. It is not required by law. As for rabies, I hate it when vets use the argument that the dogs can be put down if you fail to comply with the law. The law is different in different states too because in California the vaccine can't be given until after the dog reaches 4 months of age. I recently got a puppy from Texas who had the rabies at 15 weeks and they want to re do the rabies because, under California law it was given too early!! |

| This Lepto thing was buggin me. Here is a site that explains it. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/lepto.html In another article it said dogs under 20lb have a better chance of getting a reaction from the shot. After reading the article my state (Texas) isn't one of the states that has a lot of reported cases. Hope this helps. I am going to talk to Doc about it before I give it to my dogs. I can go to bed now it's 1 am and I have learned alot from this site today

| Everything went well. It's been an hour and he just wants to lie down, but I am not worried because he usually takes a nap around this time anyway. My vet said to wait until 6 months to give the rabies vaccine and he just turned 6 months. I asked her about Lepto and She said she would never give a Lepto vaccine and has never heard of a case of Lepto, let alone SEE a case in her office. She said it's not common and cannot be transferred to a person ever or another dog easily. IL does not mandate a rabies shot until 6 months. Hope that info helped some of you.

| Maddie did great with her rabies shot. Interestingly, my vet told me the rabies vaccine amount given is the same for a 5 pound dog as it is for a 100 pound dog. Weird, huh? The Lepto shot...I recall a post on here where one little yorkie got desperately ill from that shot! I wouldn't get it if there's anyway you can get out of it! Good luck! |

| My vet talked my husband into getting the baby girl a rabies shot, I was furious and it made a large knot on her neck, but she was fine. I waited until the boy was 6 months and got his. It just made me feel better. They will not kill a dog that bites without a rabies vaccine, they will quarantine it.
