| Mia's vet visit, some problems and lots of questions. Mia is 16 weeks old today, and we took her to the vet for her third set of shots. She weighs 4.5 lbs, and her overall health is not too bad. I am concerned about a couple of things though. For one, she has yeast infection in her ears, and we were given medicine for that. We will clean her ears with a special solution twice a day and give her ear drops. Poor babygirl. She likes her ears to get massaged after she gets the drops though. She is soooo cute. She has not gained much weight since we got her. She was 3.5 lbs at 9 weeks, and now she is only 4.5 at 16 weeks. Is that enough weight gain? I did not think so. At least she gained some though. The vet said absolutely no raw hides, because she said they have too many chemicals, and the dogs sometimes chew off large pieces. Instead she recommended Nylabone. Also, the vet said that Mia's knee caps pop off??? I had never noticed that. The vet said Mia would not step on her leg if that happened, but Mia never ever had any problems like that. I have never seen her limp or not step on her foot properly. I hope it's not a big problem. It seemed like the vet was suggesting it was a problem we would have to deal with frequently. I am a bit worried. Does anyone else's Yorkie have the same problem? Which brings me to my last question. I am thinking of buying Missing Link to supplement Mia's diet. Should I get the regular one, or the new one? Would the new formula they came up with help her with the knee cap problem? We are going back to the vet's office in a week so they can see how her ears are doing. Meanwhile, I would appreciate any experiences, suggestions, opinions. Thanks.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I think her weight gain is fine. Cali has the kneecap problem but unless it is severe she should be ok. I use the Missing Link regular and love it. It probably wouldn't hurt to use the one for joints but I don't believe it will help with the Luxating Patella's (kneecap). The ear problem should clear up with the meds pretty quickly.

| Luxating Putellas are rated 1-5. So you need to find out what rating you are to know how bad it is. |

| Roxy has Grade 3 LP in both rear legs. The General Vet and a Specialist confirmed. She will have surgery for both rear legs at the same time, next Wed. 8/9/06 My General Vet doesn't do that type of surgery. He told me that since we live in NY that we have some of the best specialists and that I should take advantage of that (since we have oppted to have the surgery done). A specialist would best be able to 'do' any that is needed that may require skill and expereince with that particular surgery. (Meaning that it may require the 'v' in the bone to be sculpted, and that's where a Specialist would have the best expertise). Best of luck. |

| Your regular vet should be able to tell you that. |

| I just took my little girl to the vet this weekend and she has yeast in both her ears! We are having to use drops twice a day, too. I think her weight gain is perfectly normal. Good thinking on the Nylabone. My yorkies LOVE the Nylabone Healthy Edibles...they have baked-in flavors like cheese, bacon, peanut butter, etc. They are yummy and completely digestible! My parents' yorkie has this same knee problem. She was diagnosed with it when she was very young. She is now 7 years old and she has NEVER had any problems with it. My parents see no need for her to have surgery since her knees don't seem to bother her, even at her adult age. My parents do feed her Missing Link Plus...the Plus formula really helps their joints. If you are going to start her on Missing Link, I would really recommend the Plus formula. It might prevent her from having to have surgery on down the road. |

| The yeast infection in her ears will clear up with the drops, but you might have to pull the hair from her ear canals to keep this from reoccuring. Luxating patellas can be minor as to never require surgery or a higher grade that eventually will have to be operated on. Time will tell. In the meantime, try to teach her that jumping off of a couch or bed is not allowed. Missing Link is great and the plus is even better. While I don't think it will do much to help the luxating patella, it certainly couldn't hurt. Her weight gain sounds fine to me, but if she is too thin you will be able to see her inidividual ribs, if she is just right you will be able to feel her ribs easily under a thin layer of fat. |
