| Bitsy's Pups question? I was wondering, I have to take Bitsy's six pups to the vet today or tomorrow for tail docking (been reading up on that thread) and to have their dew claws removed. Does anyone know anything about the dew claws and if I should or shouldn't have them removed. I am only considering it because I've read so many places that it's what you do with yorkie pups, dock their tales and remove dew claws. I was also thinking about leaving the tails long on the girls (my girl has a long beautiful tail, and having the boys tails docked (my boys tail is docked). I think it's pretty and looks cute on the girls to have a long tail and my boy Bentley is cute with a short docked tail, but maybe it's just cause I'm used to them that way. I worry that if I don't have ALL the pups tails docked, no one will want the pups (girls) that are undocked. I'm trying to decide what to do on both issues and I have to decide fast!!! because "they say" it's supposed to be done when they are 3 to 5 days old. Anyones expertise or opinion would be greatly appreciated!!! I did ask this question on the "Just Curious" thread about the tail docking but I think it may have gotten burried. I keep checking it but no one has responded |

| I would dock all the tails just for selling purposes. The dew claw should be removed. It sits high on their foot and has chance to catch on something and tear off. I impo would do both. |

| docking I would have the declaws removed..it is simple when done properly. As to tails..if I was keeping all of them, I would do as I perferred, but most people want them docked...still there are lots who do not care..in MD where I just moved from, it was very hard to sell a Yorkie with a tail..but with or without, they are just fine. |

| dew claws One of the other posters said it sits high on thier foot, kind of like a thumb I think. And it might get caught on stuff. I don't think they serve any purpose, I've just heard and read that you are supposed to have them removed when they have their tales docked. Maybe it's a matter of personal preference. I think I'm going to go ahead and have my pups docked and de-dew clawed

| The dew claw is there thumb. My yorkie's is removed but my Lab's are not. They are very sharp and we get cut by them all of the time. They do not need them and will be much better for them and everyone else to have them removed. The dew claws get caught on everything. Especially for these little ones with tine claws to begin with. Hope this helps. |

| Tails and claws I took Bitsy and the pups to the vet this morning for tail docking and dew claw removal. Bitsy got to stay with her pups and he did them one at a time where she could see him(the doctor). Thanks for all your post and replys and advice. I had mixed feelings about it and was so worried this morning if I was doing the right thing or not. We are going to keep a girl and I would have left her tail long cause I like it on girls but since they all look the same now, I don't know which one I'll keep, so I just went ahead and had them all done. They used glue instead of stiches and I've seen very little blood since I brought them home. Vet said Bitsy would take care of everything and she's been licking them on their tales a lot. I guess that is ok. They look fine and don't seem stressed or in pain. Just thought I'd give an update! Yorkiegirl, I'm not sure about having the dew claws removed after the are a couple months old. Maybe one of the other posters would know. I had a hard time finding a vet that would do both the claws and the tales for me! My regular vet would have done the tails but not the claws and I wanted it all done at the same time, so I had to call around to three other vets before I found one that would even consider doing both.
