| I dont know . I have never done this. But I have heard of people cleaning certin items down with bleach when there has been a dog with parvo in the area. I know I bought a used kennell once and thats what we did was sprayed it all down with bleach water and then again with clean water. But I have never sprayed the yard. does your dogs have all their shots? |

| bleach be careful with bleach. it is poison. it can affect the environment. it could hurt animals and plants. plus, the runoff is bad. my runoff goes directly into a local river. try to find a natural alternative. bleach is bad. it is chlorine. i don't even use bleach in my home. the fumes and residue are harmful to your health. i would check with a holistic vet. or do alot of research online. |

| I believe it is equal parts water to bleach. For enviromentally safe disinfectent that kills parvo might be available through Dog Supplies (Pet Edge, ect...). Good Luck

| I would be very careful using bleach. Most bleaches right out of the bottle are already diluted. Read the label to get the %. Equal parts water and bleach would definitely kill plants. That is way too strong, and it could really be dangerous for your Yorkie. Germs don't live forever. I don't know how hardy the parvo virus is, but if your yard has parvo germs, they will die out, especially if the yard is dry. Is your pup vaccinated? I think that is the key. |

| Did a dog die in your yard that had Parvo? Parvo will stay alive a minimum of 6 months and longer in warm areas. If a previous dog died of Parvo then your house will have to be cleaned along with anywhere the other dog could have walked. If your dog does not have the shots your vet can do blood work to see if they have picked up Parvo. Parvo can be cured if discovered early enough. The shots are critical and petedge.com does carry product that kills parvo germs also. When I go to the pound I only wear one pair of shoes or I cover the shoes I am wearing and never wear those shoes into my car/house.

| Never knew I did not know that birds carry parvo. That is a first to me. I had a dog that died of parvo and I was told by the vet to bleach the house and everything the dog touched because I had another dog. Now I have Daisy along with my mini pin and they are both healthy. I did what the vet said. I never did the yard though but luckily my other dog was up to date on his shots and heard it's harder for them to get parvo if they are adults and have there shots.

| I don't know if birds carry Parvo - but it they did, it would be a bird-specific form of the disease and not one that dogs could catch. There is what scientists call a "species barrier" that almost always keep diseases from transmitting from one species of animal to another. I think if your dogs has his shots, you needn't worry about his being in the yard, etc. Just watering every day certainly keeps most things in our yards down to a minimum. Carol Jean |

| Yes birds can transmit Parvo but only if they have touched the infected dogs poop as Parvo is not airborne. The following website might help answer some of your questions. There is a lot of information on Parvo if you do a google search with Parvo & Dogs. I agree that protecting your little one with shots is the way to go. http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm

| Ask the vet about the bleach concentration.. When using bleach to disinfect around children, it is something like one TBSP bleach to one Gallon of water.. It doesn't take much to kill germies... Bren

Bleach will probably kill your yard, if i am not mistaken, veterinary products suppliers already sell a cleaning liquid that kills most viruses. Parvo virus can live in a enviroment for a long long time...but are you so concerned because you had problems before with the virus? If not, i would just make sure the dog was properly vaccinated and you can always run a titer test to check his/her immunity to parvo.

Also in the article referred to by Cindy, it gives the bleach/water mixture as something like 1 T/qt. (I wish I could cut and paste it to be sure, but the article is copyrighted). It is interesting how long the virus can survive--according to the article 7 months or so. However, I still don't think it makes much sense to spray your yard with a bleach solution. It would be very difficult to clean every surface. If I had a dog with parvo I think would make sure all the dog poop in the yard was cleaned up, and I would clean all indoor surfaces with bleach-water solution. And I would make sure my other dogs had their vaccinations. | |

YT Addict | As a custodial Supervisor with 35 years of experience I can tell you a 50/50 mix of water and bleach is way and above safe levels of usage, 2-3 oz in a gal of water should be plenty for general disinfecting...as to Parvo check with your vet.
