| Deuce had Cataract Surgery with lens implant As an update to my previous post I wanted to let you know that Deuce did have a cataract. The ophthalmologist found he was a good candidate although she admitted that yorkies have some potential for problems. He had a mature cataract in his right eye and has one growing in the left. She proposed doing just one due to her experience with yorkies. He had it done on 11/30. He's doing great! We visited the Doc the day after surgery and he has vision. We will see her each week until the end of December. He has the "cone of shame" on so he's not thrilled about that and cannot play with his toys. That's the hardest part for him. I have drops to put in his eye several times a day and oral antibiotics, which are almost done. Of course he's getting the royal treatment and has taken over my favorite chunky throw. (see pic) This type of surgery takes a commitment on the owner's part to keep up with the medications and care for it to be successful. Will update in a few more weeks. FYI - The average age of a dog getting this surgery is 11 years. It's the same surgery as they do on humans laser and implant - don't know if the lens is the same though. Be prepared for sticker shock to the tune of about $2800 for one eye. As a human with vision problems I felt it was worth it for him to have vision for the rest of his life.

| WOW, laser and implants for dogs, how absolutely fantastic what can be done for our precious babies with today's technology. Yeah, sometimes I moan over vet prices, then smack myself and say thank GOD for the technology we have today for animals. You're a fantastic, caring, loving fur mom, and beautiful Deuce is lucky to have you as him mom. I am so happy you were able to have this surgery done, and Deuce now has vision in that eye. Just fantastic

| SO happy to hear he was a candidate for surgery and it was done. Deuce is precious. Yes, the drops after that surgery do take up a lot of time, but well worth it in the end when you have been able to save his sight. Thanks for the update!!

| My yorkie Guinness had both of his eyes done 2 years ago last month and I would agree with the commitment part! Definitely worth it though. We had a hard time the first few months with high pressure in his eyes and he developed ulcers but with the right medications the issues resolved. I was fortunate to be able to take him to work with me because he required eye drops so frequently throughout the day for several months. He didn't seem to heal as quickly as most dogs and had to wear his cone for over 2 months, but it's amazing how they get used to it. He now gets drops in both eyes twice a day. It was worth it for his quality of life! He is 11 years old now. I would do it all over again. Guinness' surgery cost a little over $5000 but fortunately we have Trupanion insurance which paid 90% of the cost less the exam fees. There has been quite a bit of out of pocket cost over the last 2 years for the exam fees and medications but not nearly as much as it would have been without the insurance. So glad we were able to do it for him! Sadly we are now dealing with kidney failure in our poor little guy. We are giving him medicine and fluids daily. It is so hard to see them failing! We have good days and bad days. I try to focus on and be thankful for the good days with him! Glad your little girl is doing good post-surgery!

| Well we're three weeks out now and the Vet took off his cone and we just have three drops a day to administer. He's doing great so far. He definitely can see as he can find the ball when we play fetch. He also isn't bumping into things anymore. We need to go in for an eye pressure check early in January and then another visit at the end of January. So far so good. I sure hope my husband heals as well as Deuce when he gets his cataract done! I bet he won't be as cooperative. Our biggest dilemma is whether to cut off his topknot since the vet had to shave about a third of it off. I'm kind of liking seeing more of his eyes ( or eye actually since its only cut around one). I also found that Deuce likes a head massage which we got into when I was grooming him with the cone on. This will morph into a new thread on here under grooming. So sorry to hear about Guiness's kidney problems. Praying for the best.
