| Getting Sick on Heartrguard JB has recently been getting sick on his generic heartworm meds (Tri-Heart). Past 3 months it was just soft stool and then just recently it was diarrhea and also throwing up. My vet told me recently not only the Heartguard but all of the generics (tri-heart, Iverheart, etc) changed their flavoring and it is the flavoring that is getting the dogs sick, not the actual medication of Ivermectin. The vet gave me one pill of Interceptor Plus to try next month to see how he does on it. I live in the Northeast where ticks are a huge problem but heartworm is not common (59 cases per 100,000). If this new pill does not work, I am seriously considering not giving him any heartworm meds at all. Has anyone had issues with Heartguard lately since this "change"? And do any of you use Interceptor and are you happy with it?

| My vet changed us to Interceptor Plus several years ago due to stomach issues on Heartguard. It was, and continues to be, a lifesaver for my little guys...no more tummy problems!

| Howdy neighbor, Heartworm protection is an absolute must. You can't even think about not giving it to your baby. I have a bigger baby at 12 Lbs. don't know if weight means anything, he's been on Interceptor Plus for 4 years now and no reactions. His yearly test is always negative for heart worm so yes, I am very satisfied with it. He just a new batch in July with his yearly check up. It could be there are lower cases of heartworm because many ppl are giving their animals a protection pill against it, the 59 cases you bring out could be from animals that have had no protection meds. You are now changing from one brand of protection to another, you may not see any change in the first Interceptor Plus pill because your baby has 3 months of Tri-Heart meds in his system, it takes time to get these meds out of their system. I would not base reaction giving one pill of Interceptor Plus and there is still diarrhea, that could be from Tri-heart and not the Interceptor Plus.

| We have not had issues but I generally buy a year supply in January so maybe I have it before the change. I have always used it even my parents used it on our dogs growing up with no issues. I heard that interceptor is going to stop producing it soon but not sure if that is true or not. I would never not give heart worm protection because if your dog gets heart worms and lives through it they will be left with significant heart damage. In order to get rid of heart worms you have to poison your dog and it costs over $1000. It’s just not safe to give nothing. Haven’t you be having diarrhea issues for awhile? Are you sure it is even the preventive?

JB did have issues with diarrhea but that has been resolved for a while now because he was on Flagyl. No special diet needed and I switched him over to a salmon and rice which has been very helpful and the stools have looked excellent. I gave him the heartworm medicine in the morning with his food and by 10pm that night, he was having diarrhea and he threw up. That was his only episode and by the next day in the evening, his stool was back to normal so it was definitely the heartworm meds.

| I did not know that Heartgard had been changed. My girls have been on it for quite awhile with no difficulties. A couple of years ago my Vivi got into two packs of Heartgard and I about had a heart attack when I got home and found the boxes opened. She ate nine of them. I called the emergency vet and they had me call the dog poison control. Turns out that she would have had to have eaten 12 to have any poor effects. If Heartgard had been changed, of course this could all be different now.

| Our vet told us it isn’t necessary to take meds for heart worm. He said they test every year for it and if there’s a problem they can deal with it. |

| In the United States it is absolutely necessary. The way they treat heartworms is by giving your dog poison to kill the worms and in most cases it leaves the dogs with lasting heart issues. The dog also has to be on create rest the whole times.
