| Yorkie Puppy Dental Care - 12 to 16 weeks My late senior had great teeth--she totally spoiled us. Katy was vet checked regularly but didn't require continuing "dentals" (she had one, rather early). We didn't brush her teeth; she generally turned her nose up at any kind kind of dental chew. I assume the new little one will be too young for brushing. BUT, she wouldn't be too young to get her used to having a q-tip rubbed on her teeth each night. Am I mis-judging the whole process of getting a little one used to having her teeth brushed nightly? While she may be too young for brushing, should I get her used to the taste of doggy toothpaste? Have invested in some chews (below). What else would you recommend for these young pups? C.E.T. | My pup is 9months old and we brush daily. I started when she was young by putting some PetSmile toothpaste on my finger and rubbing it around in her mouth. By the time we got to brushes she was acclimated and loved the toothpaste so we had no problems. My previous Yoirkie had lots of dental issues so I did not want this like gal to go,through that. Ge Eric’s plays a big role however.

I like the idea of getting her used to a routine of light rubbing AND the taste of the toothpaste. P.S. I intend to inquire of the vet right away, but I came to believe part of Katy's dental success was because her vet dictated early on what she ate based on the structure and size of her bite. Genetics would certainly be the determining factor of the bite size and structure.

| I would start getting them used to brushing ASAP. I did that with Callie and she never fought or had issues with me doing it. I also would get the puppy used to you touching the mouth area and looking at the teeth too.

Seems the touching and checking is good at 12 weeks, but worry that actual brushing should wait a little bit. Do you recall how old Callie was when you used a brush? No author attribution here, but lots of pictures and details. "Teeth & Teething," Yorkies United. That article, caveats as above, describes that incisors begin to fall out and be replaced by permanents--such that the pup will have both baby and permanent teeth. Then the canines will fall out and be replaced by permanents. Goes on to suggest the "correctness" of the pups bite isn't knowable until 6 to 7 months.

| Some of them take A LOT longer to get used to it then others. Callie is very chill and will let anything happen to her. With Joey and Penny I used an older brush and let them chew on it a few times before. Joey took less time to get used to it then Penny. Whether you use CET tooth paste or not they have the tiniest tooth brushes which work better for Yorkies tiny mounts better then anything I have come across. You might can find them cheaper elsewhere but I just wanted to show it to you https://www.amazon.com/CET-FBA_CETSB...cet+toothbrush
