| Best Puppy Food I will be getting my yorkie babies on June 5th. I am wanting to get everything ready for them to come home. What is the best food for them? I have heard everything from Blue Buffalo, Nurto, Natural Balance, Wellness Core, and Taste of the Wild. I want to hear from you all, so that I ensure I am feeding them the best. Thanks! |

| Congratulations! How old will they be? Generally it is thought to be best to keep them on their current food until they are established at your house and routine. Their current food may be fine, but consider why you would change. Best of luck and enjoy those babies!

| Welcome ka1108! You wrote, "...getting yorkie babies on June 5th." I'm so excited for you. Note the -ies and the pronouon them--sounds like you expect two or more of these bundles of joy. Separate from "what's the best," here's some food for thought (pardon the pun): 1. Transitioning--likely from breeder to forever home--can be a bit overwhelming to both pups and pup parents. Consider staggering the changes (chew toys, food, treats, sleeping arrangements, potty routines, etc.) you intend to make. In other words and to the point of your query, consider arranging to serve them, for the short term, the same food fed by the breeder. 2. Start a tooth brushing routine right away. While there are differing opinions among forum members about the correlation between food and dental excellence, suspect all of us agree that brushing their teeth significantly improves the odds--regardless of the food you serve them. 3. Schedule their feeding routine and watch for signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Here's an article, "Setting up a puppy feeding schedule" published by theSprucePets.com. And another, "Low Blood Sugar in Yorkies," by thenest.com. Again, so excited for you.--Katy'sMom P.S. You shared the date...hope we see some pictures about then!! Yorkie pictures are sooooo wonderful. Last edited by KatysMom; 05-16-2018 at 07:46 AM. |

| Thank you both for your responses! The girl is on Taste of the Wild Puppy and will pick her up on June 5th. She was born April 10. The boy the breeder just told me the mom isn't interested in nursing anymore, so I told her I would bring the food (she feeds her Yorkies Kibbles n' Bits) and I know that isn't good at all. The boy was born on April 29. Thank you all for the feedback. I would just like to know what food is best! |

| I have Zoey and Riley on Holistic Select Puppy food for toy breeds. The kibble is really small and they love it! Good luck and congrats on your new baby! |

Lots of people on here have a differing opinion on Raw that isn't like mine. I personally believe Canned Ceasers is horrible to feed our guys, but PLENTY of people don't agree with that. Type it into the search bar and you'll see lots of posts, and every one saying what they like. I believe that for the most part, every one is correct. Yorkiemini is correct about changing the food right away, though. However, the vet will give you very good information on changing the food the correct way- especially if the vet is in agreement about your food being not the best. Please, though, when (if) you search through the topics, look up things to not feed them. Especially rich and fattening foods. That is NOT good will cause our guys to get very sick. Lots and lots of good information on here. Please post pictures when you can!

| I transitioned Gidget from what the breeder used to Royal Canin for Yorkies. Have had no problems with her eating it or any digestive upsets. Will continue using it as long as she likes it and there are no digestive problems. Each little one is different and everyone has an opinion about what is best. What is best is what agrees with Gidget. Took her to the Vet today. She weighed in at 4.9. He said she's in perfect condition and to keep doing what I'm doing. Don't change a thing. That's the best endorsement I can give for what I'm feeding her. |

| Leave her on what she is on for awhile until she fully adjust to her new life. Then if you want to switch foods you have to look at whether vet nutritionists are on staff, do they do feeding trials, and do they have good quality control. To many people focus on ingredients instead of what is important. Royal Canin, Hills/Science diet and Wellness all do the above. I do have to put a warning to never buy or use Blue Buffalo they have been sued many times for lying, they have very bad quality control and it is known to cause GI issues. Congrats on your new pup.

| How exciting! Congrats and what a great idea to be on this forum getting ready - I did the same thing! My little guy Niko was on Royal Canin X-Small Puppy/Chiot until he was 11 months old and then I transitioned him to Acana Free-Run Poultry. He is doing great today at 1 year and 4 months old - weighing in at 7lbs. The one thing that we can all agree on - the puppies must eat to avoid hypoglycemia! So whatever they are being fed now and are eating - is what you should continue with until you have them at a safe weight and then you can begin to transition them to the food of your choice. There is a lot of preparation to be done when bringing home these cuties, so best of luck darling and feel free to reach out with any questions! You came to the right place! |

Thank you for the details. Am I reading that correctly--your 2-1/2 week-old male's "mom isn't ... nursing anymore." Not sure how well he can transition to solid food at that young age. Are you concerned or is breeder worried the little man is in trouble? Article, "Newborn Yorkies" published by YorkieInfoCenter says, "In the first 3 to 4 weeks, the dam will be the sole caretaker ..." Another article refers to "Puppy fading syndrome" from which puppies can die. A vet hospital lists "Mother's neglect of the puppies by refusing to .... nurse them" as a condition that can cause the syndrome. The article lists actions that can be taken--but those seem tips for the breeder. Finally, see the article, "Emergency Newborn Puppy Care," published by the nest. (Has section, "Feeding.) Perhaps you've thought through these possible issues or maybe I misread your post.

| Would seem the male and female pups are coming from two different breeders--OP reports the pups being fed two different brands (Taste of Wild and Kibbles 'n Bits), saying one breeder, "feeds her Yorkies Kibbles n' Bits. Separately, hoping we hear back from ka1108, I'm so worried about the little male whose mama isn't interested in nursing. Hope to learn the breeder is providing emergency care. |
