Yes, it is a huge problem with Wheatens. PLN and PLE afflict about 10 to 15% of all Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers in the US. Here is a quote from a research article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10668820

Because only a handful of SCWT were first used as breeding stock in North America about 25 years ago, it is not surprising that a common ancestor could be identified and that an epidemiologic survey estimated that about 10–15% of the current breed population is affected with these diseases (Slater, personal communication). There may be many more dogs at risk.

I suppose we should be thankful that PLN and PLE are less of a problem in Yorkies. Still, I hope that research continues, and that tests are developed for these and other genetic diseases for the sake of the next generation of Yorkshire Terriers as well as other dog breeds.

Actually PLE is very common in yorkies. The specialist I use was thinking about doing a study a couple of years ago and asked about using Cookie. Last I spoke with him, it was on the back burner.

Yorkshire Terriers

When compared with one hospital population, Yorkshire Terriers were found to have an OR of 10.1 for development of PLE, and a similar predisposition was noted in our hospital. Affected dogs commonly had lymphangiectasia and lymphocytic plasmacytic enteritis and were more likely than other breeds to be hypocalcemic and hypomagnesemic. Although malabsorption and GI loss of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D as well as inadequate parathyroid hormone production are suggested as possible causes for the breed-related phenomenon, the exact pathogenesis is unknown.

That second article you mentioned is depressing, isn't it? I have seen every one of those conditions. Only one was a case that was not with me...I have had experience with all of the others.

The specialist told me that often PLE and PLN are seen together which was the case with one of mine.....that is why I wondered if PLN is perhaps more common in yorkies than is known. PLN can go undiagnosed for some time (years) unless people are really good about going to a vet yearly and doing blood and urine testing. My vet told me the reason I see so much is because I look for it. At first I didn't understand what he meant...LOL I thought he was saying I wanted it... he meant that I do the necessary testing.
