| nails splitting Hey All- i can't find any posts specific to what my question is... Over the last couple months I have taken my little guy for long walks (up to 3 miles) almost everyday. In the last couple of weeks I noticed he started licking his paws a lot because his nails have become extremely short to the quick- and most of them are split down the middle behind the nail. I think it may be from walking and trying to run on asphalt/concrete as most of our walks are on paths and sidewalks. He loves walking and will never complain if he is in pain but I can't keep taking him if this keeps happening. Anyone seen this before? Any suggestions on what to do? Do you think little booties or something would help? How long will his nails be split for?!

| Mine walks on sidewalks for 3 miles at least every other day. I do not have to clip her nails, but have never seen any splitting. Once the nails are short they would probably have very little if any contact with the surface. Wondering if you come across any salt used for de-icing that may be drying the nail out? I do not think it is simply from walking on a hard surface but more likely a vitamin deficiency. If the nails are splitting that far back and he is licking you also need to worry about infection setting in. I personally think a trip to the vet might be needed. |

| Ocassionaly when I trim my girls nails they have done a split like thing. I'm not really sure what causes it honestly. Short nails shouldn't touch the ground after a certain point. Shoes are also an opinion. AllDogBoots.com is an awesome place to buy some. The owner is a member her and she's great. Because he is also liking his paws you may want to clean them after your walks he may be coming in contact with something that might be irritating them.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Honestly, you really *should* see the vet on this one. Reason why: the quick of the nail is *very* vascular - so not only can it bleed profusely but if there are actual splits, it means it's extremely vulnerable to infection. Also, the quicks are very innervated - which means PAIN. Also also , the nails should not be splitting as you're describing - so if it were me, I'd want thyroid checked and some perhaps some basic chem panels done, just to make sure all is okay. The vet may want to wrap the paws and/or do boots for a while, btw. Keep us posted...I'm curious to find out what's wrong here...

Years ago, while Wylie went undiagnosed for hypothyroid and Cushings by his former crappy vet - he was having some weird splitting too, it was so unusual...but later made sense.

So, let me ask you...when you did the Cortisol-Creatinine test..was the result intermediate or positive or...? And then you did the the ACTH probably? What was the result there? What random (even if seemingly unrelated) symptoms does she have...?

Can you get the Cortisol-Creatinine Ratio Urine test result and the ACTH...? Honestly, I'd either re-test...go to an Internist...or, insist they send the blood to U of Tenn. The best thing would be to just send to U of Tenn, bc that's probably what you may have to do in the end anyway, really.

| It seems to be off and on. I have them test her for UTIs every couple of months because of it.
