Ocassionaly when I trim my girls nails they have done a split like thing. I'm not really sure what causes it honestly. Short nails shouldn't touch the ground after a certain point. Shoes are also an opinion. AllDogBoots.com is an awesome place to buy some. The owner is a member her and she's great. Because he is also liking his paws you may want to clean them after your walks he may be coming in contact with something that might be irritating them.
